Mangalore Apr 28: The district central jail which was earlier situated in Kodialbail, is expected to be shifted to the outskirts of the city. This follows a visit from the director general of prisons Jayarammaiah to the plot at Neermarga, which has been chosen for the construction of a new jail building.

Despite plans of shifting the present jail to a new venue, expansion works on it began a year ago, at an estimated budget of Rs 8.5 crore. Space was a major hurdle for expansion, as a portion of its 25-30 acres of land was taken for the construction of the veterinary hospital and district institute for education and training.

With the DG giving a positive response to the proposal of shifting the jail, the expansion work at the present jail in Kodialbail will be delayed.  The land identified at Neermarga has about 37 acres and there are plans of increasing the budget as well as prison capacity from 150 to 600 inmates. This way, under trials who belong to the region but are kept in other prisons can be retained here. Currently, under trials who have completed six months are sent to Mysore due to a lack of space in the present jail.
