Mangalore Apr 29: A silent protest against the inaction of civic authorities on constructing illegal high-rise in the city was organized by Citizens’ Forum for Mangalore Development here on Friday April 28.

A press release issued by the forum said that high-rise buildings were being built in restricted areas and narrow lanes without consideration to zoning regulations and were in violation of building bye-laws and national building code (NBC). The buildings were constructed in spite of refusal of NOC by the department of fire and emergency services.

Despite repeated requests by the forum to the commissioner, MCC and other authorities to take prompt and stringent action against the violators, no response was received.

The release stated that the chief secretary has also directed that the Mangalore City Corporation should take immediate steps against building constructions which have been constructed in violation of the existing bye-laws and that the deputy commissioner should closely monitor the action taken by the MCC in this regard, failing which he may initiate action at this level as per law.

The High Court of Karnataka had passed an interim order on April 18 directing the MCC commissioner and other authorities not to grant permission to any building that is in violation of the rules. Despite the order, some builders carry on their illegal building plans and will eventually face the consequences of legal procedures, the release stated.
