Mangalore May 1: The Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has agreed to release water from its dam into the reservoir of Mangalore City Corporation at Thumbe.

Mangalore City Corporation Mayor K Ashraf said that the MRPL officials have conveyed their decision to the Deputy Commissioner and himself. The meeting was attended by engineers of the Mangalore City Corporation, MRPL and other officials

Ashraf said water will start flowing into the reservoir from Monday and it is hoped that the reservoir will reach its full capacity (13 ft) in a couple of days.

The Mayor indicated that the corporation would take up "clearance of bunds" in the catchment areas of the reservoir. He said six bunds have been constructed by plantation owners alongside the banks of the river.

On Saturday, the water level in the Thumbe reservoir stood at six feet. If the Thumbe reservoir is able to get its full level of water, the city can manage for another 25 days, Ashraf added.
