Udupi, Jan 3: The 'Pura Pravesha' of Sri Vidyavallabhatirtha Swamiji of Shree Kaniyur Math, who will ascend the ‘Paryaya Peetha’ on January 18, was held here on Thursday January 2 amid fan fare.

The Swamiji was given a rousing welcome by a large number of people who gathered to welcome him. A procession was taken from Jodukatte during which the Kaniyur Swamiji sat on a decorated chariot.

The procession passed through Diana Circle, Koladapete, Thenkupete and culminated at Car Street. Traditionally dressed folk artistes and others added color to the procession. The teams that participated in the procession included 'Chende’ troupes 'Dollu Kunitha' performers, band-sets, people carrying colorful umbrellas, and bhajan teams.

'Pura Pravesha' marked the return of Sri Vidyavallabhatirtha Swamiji from a pre-Paryaya pilgrimage to different pilgrim centres in the country.

A felicitation ceremony for the Swamiji was held later in the evening by the district administration.

During the ceremony, MLA Pramod Madhwaraj said that the state government has granted Rs 3 crore for the Paryaya and an additional Rs 3 crore for the development of Udupi.

District incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake said that soon heritage status will be given to Udupi.

CMC president Yuvraj, vice-president Amrita Krishnamurthy, former MLA Raghupati Bhat, Kota Srinivas Poojary, Kaniyoor Math diwan Raghuram Acharya, Balaji Raghavendra Acharya and others were present.

Nice procession very nice ritual, but the procession road looks very very underdeveloped, very sad govts have come and gone, always boast of the our famous Udupi Temple, but when tourist come and have a look around the temple area they are in for a huge huge shock, very very shabby, I being from Udupi feel sad, and always wonder WHY we can't have that area much more beautified like other holy places all vote bank politics is hindering development, please wake, wish Dr. V.S. Achar was alive, may his soul rest in peace, we need another leader like him to develop hope we see better things to come
