Mangalore: Week-long national book fair to begin in city from Jan 4

Mangalore, Jan 3: Bookworms in the city are in for a delightful week with the National Book Trust, India (NBT) all set to organize a mega book fair at Nehru Maidan here from Saturday January 4 to January 12.

National Book Trust an apex body under the ministry of human resource development, department of higher education, government of India. It is organizing a book fair in Mangalore after a long gap of 13 years.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday January 3, veteran Konkani activist and founder of World Konkani Centre, Basti Vaman Shenoy said "The book fair will be inaugurated by B Ramanath Rai, minister of forest, ecology and environment on January 4 at Nehru Maidan, Mangalore at 5 pm.

"Around 40 publishers and book sellers from all over India will be taking part in NBT Mangalore book fair. The total number of stalls will be upto 60," he said.

Explaining the purpose behind organizing the book fair, he said, "Day by day readers are increasing in Mangalore, especially the college students. We are holding this book fair for the benefit of students, teachers, academicians, book lovers and the general public."

Apart from the exhibition-cum-sale of books by publishers from various parts of the country, the book fair will showcase a range of literary events and children's activities, he added.

Amit Karki, regional head, NBT, Mangalore, H Nagarajappa, editor (Kannada), NBT were also present.

    In the present audio video infested world, the reading habits in the people is declining. NBT should be congratulated for organising the fair which will encourage people in general and youngesters in particular to inculcate reading habit by availing this opportunity of buying books on various subjects. I hope discounts offered will be an additional incentive.
