Mangalore, May 7: The much awaited Mangalore-Hassan railway linking became a reality on Friday, May 5 as the maiden goods carrier left Mangalore to Hassan.

The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) sent a cargo of 2,500 metric ones of DAP (fertilizers) imported from Zuari Industries Ltd. The fertilizer which was loaded at NMPT used the new railway line between Mangalore and Hassan.

NMPT has plans to transport 3,375 metric tones of coal for Mysore Mills and fertilizers to Davangere.

According to P Tamilvanan, chairman NMPT, the utilization of the rail line would reduce traffic on roads and also ensure smooth transport on train.
