Bangalore: Yeddyurappa meets speaker, asks to be recognised as BJP member

Bangalore, Jan 3 (IANS): A day after agreeing to merge his Karnataka Janata Party with the Bharatiya Janata Party, B.S. Yeddyurappa Friday requested assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa to recognise him and his party legislators as BJP members.

"I submitted a letter to the speaker informing that KJP is merging with BJP and hence we should be recognised as BJP members," Yeddyurappa told reporters after meeting Thimappa in the state secretariat.

The KJP has six members in the 225-member assembly but one of them - B.R. Patil - has decided not to join BJP. Patil told reporters in home district Gulbarga in north Karnataka Friday that his "mindset" was against BJP and hence he was not joining it.

Yeddyurappa has also written a letter to the Election Commission informing it of the merger of the KJP with BJP.

Yeddyurappa was BJP's first chief minister in Karnataka after leading the party to victory in 2008 assembly elections but was forced to quit office in July 2011 over corruption charges. He quit BJP in December last year to head KJP.

Thimmappa told reporters that he would take a decision on Yeddyurappa's request after BJP officially informs him of its decision.

As and when the speaker recognises KJP members as BJP members, BJP will become the main opposition party in place of Janata Dal-Secular.

The BJP and JD-S won 40 seats each in the May assembly election, which brought back the Congress to power. However, the JDS was recognised as the opposition party as its vote share was higher that of BJP.

    Dear readers,

A mockery of Democracy and Election commision of India?

Any XYZ can split from parent party to build his own party and later can merge on his own will.Fools are the voters. How can constitutional right of the voters is protected when candidate change the parties?

This flaw need to be fixed in our democracy. Can AAP and Mr.Kejriwal can take this as a challenge?Any citizen journal can file a petition in court?

    A reader suggestion

1.A winning candidate cross the party in any circumstance this seat is void.
2.A same candidate cannot be contested from the same constituency again for next five years.
3.This constituency should be under governor rule with District commissioner over looking.
4.The elected member should furnish the detail for change in his stand and give guarantee to election commision for not returning to the parent party.

A reelection is a additional burden to the citizen exchequer.A govt.of India need to stop this practice immediately.

Yeddy might have got huge sums of black money from BJP to merge his party with mother party.... If a crook like yeddy has to be accepted back into BJP, just to get the lingayath votes, then the "party with a difference" is no better than congress in doing vote bank politics...Both BJP and Congress are 2 sides of the same coin. Hopefully AAP will soon make an impact in Karnataka so that BJP and Congress don't take public for a ride...
