Mangalore: Court issues search warrant for 'missing' bride

Media Release

Mangalore, Jan 4: The local court has issued a search warrant for a bride after her fiancé appealed to the court to search for her, alleging that she had been kidnapped by her own relatives.

Kumari Padma Bhapat, daughter of Sudhakar, a resident of Vanivada of Devagada taluk at Sindudurga district in Maharashtra was engaged to marry Mangalore’s Sriram on November 27, 2013 in the presence of their families.

Meanwhile, relatives of the bride Prashanth Godse and Pramod Khelkar allegedly took Rs 6.5 lac from the groom by blackmailing him.  The groom transferred the amount to their bank accounts.

It is said that the bride sent several SMS messages to the groom saying that she would marry only him.  The bride and the two relatives also stayed in the house of the groom at Ballal Bagh.  However, the two relatives allegedly demanded another Rs 20 lac from the groom and kidnapped the bride after the groom refused to pay the money.

There is scarcity of brides among Brahmins and Prashanth Godse and Pramod Khelkar, relatives of the bride are said to have taken undue advantage of the situation to demand money.

The practice of showing a bride to several men and demanding money from them is said to be in existence among Brahmins in north India.  It is said that Prashanth and Pramod had prepared to show the bride to many men and force her to marry them. In view of the developments, the groom has lodged a complaint to the court.

Mangalore’s JMFC court has issued a search warrant for the bride and sought cooperation from the officials of Sindudurga police in Maharashtra.

The police are on the lookout for the bride and the complainant has announced a suitable reward for those who can locate the bride.

The complainant's telephone number is 07259488857 and that of the Barke police is 0824 2220522.  The complainant has also requested youths to beware of similar incidents.

Advocate P P Hegde is the counsel for the complainants.

This type of extortion racket has been running in Mumbai in various forms!! While empathizing with the victim, cannot understand how he fell to blackmail to pay 6,5 lacs without having falling in some sort of a vulnerable situation which is the "modus operandi" of these people to exploit and extort money from the victim??

    Rudolf Sir....
Think this Sriram was in full 'josh'!First time you see!One learns from experience!
If you come from a famine stricken place and if somebody shows you even a photo of an 'apple'-your eyes lit up...Same way...here only 'apple' is substituted by 'Padma' and this bloke has money to pay. That's all.
You heard about 'paying for trouble'? Then this is it.
Just think of this!Rs 6.5 lakhs without doing anything -I mean just like that for her relatives!
Wonder what he would have given 'Padma' after marriage! This girl I think had hit a 'jackpot' or some 'pot' for sure!Only she has turned her back at it! And what more ,invited trouble!

I meant what you explained Bhandarkarmaam and that is what the "vulnerable situation" due to the weakness of the human body that is taken of full advantage by the gang or nobody would ever shell out 6.5 lacs in advance!!! And this racket runs in various other guises too!!

A recent one in Mumbai wherein a guy literally got married to a girl by following the regular proposal system only to find out that on the day of the honeymoon the bride vanished with all the cash and gold in the house, later on when tracked and arrested it was found that it was a well established racket and many victims had fallen prey to it but never came forward to complain!!

In another incident, a female called up an estate agent asking to find a customer for her flat!! The agent as usual went personally to see the flat wherein he was accosted by two other people and forced to pose for obscene pics and later threatened with extortion!!

Moral of the story men also are in danger of subtle rape of the kinds mentioned above and they have to be very very careful when interacting with the opposite sex!!
