Mangalore, May 7: For a rich boating experience one would visit Pilikula Nisargadhama. But on Sunday it was fishing time at Pilikula Nisargadhama!

Sunday was the day when the tourist spot turned into a market for vending fishes. Just fished out from the Pilikula Lake Catla’s, Rohu’s, Mrigal’s and Common Carp’s were sold like hot cakes.

The third sale organized at the Nisargadhama since its inception was organized by the Nisargadhama management with assistance from the Department of Fisheries.

Over 30 fishermen under the guidance of Mark Fernandes of Miyar, Karkala undertook fishing operation in the lake. The fishing which began on the midnight of Saturday ended on Sunday noon.

The scene at the Nisargadhama was interesting. The catch was brought out of the water in net bags and in no time buyers would pick them up. The fresh fish were sold off alive.

Vice chancellor of Mangalore University Kaveriappa was one of the enthusiastic buyers at the venue.

Speaking to Daijiworld deputy director Fisheries Department Suresh Ullal said that the fish was priced at Rs 80 per kilogram. He further added that fishing was difficult in the lake due to the rise in the water level.

“You buy it or you miss it,” said Suraj a buyer who had traveled from Kundapur to lay his hands on the fresh fish.

The entire process of fishing and selling was an amusement to the children who had only cries of excitement on seeing the 3 ft long fishes fluttering out of water. Anxious audience drew to take a closer look on the fishing act at the lake.

More than 400 kgs of fish was sold at the venue.
