Sharjah, Jan 5: In a press release, Al Bilal Medical Centre’s ‘Baby Friend’, pediatric department at Jamal Abdul Nasser Street, Sharjah has announced that it is offering free nutritional assessment and diet advice for children. In addition, breast feeding promotion classes for women and free medical services also are given for needy children.

There are many misconceptions on breastfeeding, said Dr Sudhakar Shetty. “A baby needs exclusive breastfeeding at least for first six months and not even water. Breastfeeding is hygienic, safe, nutritional, immunologically strong and good for proper brain growth of baby. Whereas bottle feeding causes recurrent cough and loose motions.”

Dr Sudhakar Shetty further enlightened the facts. “A baby needs breastfeeding until 2 years to be healthy and strong. No harm in starting subsidiary diet after 6 months. During weaning baby can be given home based mashed diet like rice, porridge, dal, kichidi, yoghurt, potato, carrot, veg soup, apple, banana, papaya etc. However, not all at once. This should be given in a gradual process one by one. It is advisable to give egg and non-veg food after 13 months.”

“In real sense breastfeeding is also beneficial to mothers.” Dr Sudhakar Shetty clarified. “It decreases the possibility of ovarian and breast cancer.”

He also cautioned: “Avoid bottle feeding, avoid applying oil on head and face during baby bath. Nevertheless exposing baby to sunlight will help to strengthen the bones of baby. Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, muscles and overall health. Sunlight is a good source that provides vitamin D. The child should be exposed to sunlight that passes through a plain window glass which filters Ultraviolet (UV) rays. A balanced approach to sunlight exposure can help you avoid vitamin D deficiency, which can have significant positive health effects.”
