Puttur, May 8:
A demand was placed by a delegation of women to re-open the Balavana swimming pool which was closed following the death of a boy here in April. Due to this, students who want to take part in the state-level swimming competition are deprived of the much-needed practice, they said.

The Balavana swimming pool was built six years ago by Harsh Gupta, the then president of the Balavana Development Committee, at a cost of Rs 45 lac with eight tracks of 25 metres each. Though adults were allowed to use the pool, it was proposed that children would be given more importance. Training was imparted to children on a regular basis before the closure of the pool.

Four children who were selected from Puttur to participate in the state-level swimming competition were practicing at this pool but now their practice has been hindered. The delegation has therefore asked the committee to re-open the pool.
