Mangalore, May 8:
The council meeting to be held on Tuesday May 30 is expected to discuss the sanction of land at old port for the use of traders dealing in scrap material.

There is also a likelihood that the issue may be discussed by the finance committee before it is brought before the council. The committee may also decide the rent to be paid by the traders to the Mangalore City Corporation.

Speaking to reporters, mayor K Ashraf said that about 70 cents of land at the old port area belongs to the MCC and that the traders will be given as much land as they require or half of it may be retained with the corporation if the land is too vast. The MCC will also benefit from this proposal as it will be an extra income, he said.

The decision is an outcome of the accusation levelled by the opposition against the traders that they had encroached land. The commissioner had said that if they didn’t clear the encroached land, stringent action would be taken against them.
