Udupi, May 9: Suddha, the first ever Tulu language film shot in digital format, is waiting for release in digital theatres of Mangalore, Mumbai and Bangalore, shortly.

The director of Suddha (105 min), P N Ramachandra, is a Mumbai-based film maker hailing from Udupi and is a product of the Film and Television Institute in Pune. The film is his first work.

Suddha is based on the well-known Tulu play “Bojja” (Last Rituals), written the Mumbai-based Tulu playwright, Nandalike Naryan.

It tells the story of three generations of a family of former landlords in a small village, now living lost glory. The eldest brother looks after whatever property is left and the younger one lives in Mumbai with his wife and children, sending money to keep up the prestige of their family. Then the mother dies and the two brothers and the proud landlord (father) try to perform the last rituals on a grand scale to salvage their prestige. But when the father too dies, the two sons find it extremely difficult to perform the last rites.

A unique feature of the film is that it has no background music at all and most of the actors are local amateurs.

It was shot in Marnad village, near Moodbidri. Produced by Mohan Marnad and Surendra Kumar of Mumbai, the film features Subhas Padiwal, Boja Shetty, Sharada Devi, Sujatha Mudaradi and Saikrishna Kudla.
