Bangalore: Nandan Nilekani ready to contest Lok Sabha polls, to join Congress

Bangalore, Jan 10: Ending speculation about his foray into politics, billionaire Infosys co-founder and head of Aadhar programme Nandan Nilekani today said he would join the Congress and was ready to contest the Lok Sabha polls.

"Certainly. I believe I should do something on the political front. If Congress gives me a ticket, I will contest (the Lok Sabha elections this year)," he told reporters, making public his stand on the issue for the first time.

58-year-old Nilekani, who is the Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India, said talks are going on about the constituency from which he should be contesting. He added that he would join Congress, which has been very "supportive" to him and his ideas.

The Congress is likely to field Nilekani from Bangalore South, a middle-class centric constituency, known for its antipathy towards Congress since the late 1970s, from where BJP General Secretary Ananth Kumar has won five times.

Nilekani said ordinary citizens should join politics and he would like to be part of this movement. "In India the biggest change can be brought about through politics and I want to be there," he said.

The country needs more good people from all fields including the corporate world, he said, adding politics is an instrument of change.

BJP's Anant Kumar is sweating with fear when he heard that Nelikani may contest from Bangalore South as Cong Candidate.
Moreover, this Constituency has a large number of Lingayat Voters who are loyal to Yeddy, and they have not forgotten how Anant has humiliated Yeddy and pulled him down from CM post and subsequently compelled yeddy to leave BJP. Even though now Yeddy has re-joined BJP still Lingayats are sore at Shakuni Mama Anant.

This is a good move, especially of an well educated and corporate icon, which is very badly needed at this hour to our Political system. Instead of making an illiterate, corrupt and communal one to a MP, let us try to make possible the educated and really problem solver to take the front seat and to lead the masses. Indian political system disgusted with communal, scammed and corrupt politicians like Yeddi who have no shame to come back and beg BJP to get a seat in its own gangsters and Mafias!! JAI HO!!

@ H.L- It could be your wishful thought that you are expressing. Bangalore South is a strong anti congress area & non congress parties have won over the years. Ananth Kumar has nurtured the constituency very well & concerns have been taken note of & acted upon. No wonder he has been winning for last 4 terms!!People of Bangalore South could have been more happy if Nilekani had joined AAP or something...

Your guess is totally wrong and based on politically biased.Mr.Narayana Murthy of Chief Mentor has endorsed Modi's candidature for future Prime Ministership.Great cricketer like Siddu, great Artist Hema Malini even great Scientist Abdul Kalam lean with BJP thinking. There are lots of scientists, writers, people from cinema field, business world etc., are with BJP.Nandan Nilekani is a great person No doubt about it.Politics is something different which is beyond your thinking.
