Karkala, May 11: A wireless tower belonging to the forest department at Valikunja in Andar village near here has allegedly been damaged by Naxalites.

The Naxalites have stolen 3 repeater sets and have burnt down the battery of the wireless tower.  The incident came to light when the forester Raveendra went to the place to replace some of the equipments of the tower with the new ones on Monday.

The miscreants have opened the main battery and have burnt it.  As a result the battery has partially damaged.  The loss has been estimated at Rs 30,000.

The area is fully covered with dense woods and there is no proper approach road leading to the place.  People have to walk about 12 kilometers to reach the place.  So it is said that Naxals who are spotted in these areas could have stolen the repeaters for their use.  These repeaters were used by the forest department staff to converse with each other while on duty.
