Mangalore, Jan 12: Bajpe police have arrested four women and a man for stealing gold ornaments from a house in broad daylight at Ambikanagar under Padupera gram panchayat limits.

The theft was committed between 11 am and 1 pm on January 2 at the house of Padmanabha Tailor. Seeing that no one was in the house, the thieves broke open the rear door and gained entry. They then looted gold worth Rs 3.5 lac from the cupboard.

The arrested are scrap collector Muniyamma, Sarasu alias Saraswati, Lakshmi, Gulabi and Manju alias Manja, all from Tamil Nadu and staying at Pachanady in Vamanjoor. They were produced in court and remanded in judicial custody.

Panambur ACP Ravikumar, Bajpe police inspector Narasimhamurthy, SI Anant Murdeshwar, crime branch ASP Seetaram, head constable Suresh, police personnel Jayanand Bharat, Chandrahas, Shashidhar and Fathima were part of the operation.

This is not the first time that Bajpe police are nabbing thieves hailing from Tamil Nadu. The gang mostly consists of women and they put forward children and pregnant women to pull the wool over the people's eyes. The five arrested also had a small child with them.

What is my strong belief is to drive them out of the area the moment people see them. They take out all the manhole (cast iron) covers or water meter covers, destroy them and sell as scrap. From my compound alone, they took out 2 times last year. There are thieves in the guise of beggars. These can be found in Hampankatta area as well. Scrap dealers welcome them in open arms. Police personnel should have a routine check up at the scrap yards to control these people in stealing things left and right. Beware !!!!
