Mangalore: Row over cricket betting takes communal turn at Kulai

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Jan 15: An altercation between two groups of friends took a communal turn at Kulai here on Tuesday January 14.

A week ago, a friendly cricket match at Kulai ended in a fight over a betting issue. Complaints and counter-complaints were lodged in Suratkal police station. It is alleged that local political leaders tried to gain mileage out of the incident, but in vain.

On Monday January 13 night, Kulai resident Ijaz Ahmed (21) was on his way to Kulai mosque to partcipate in a religious programme when he was stopped by his friends Anil, Devaraj, Sujith, Nikhil, Bala and Vikas, all residents of Kulai. They asked him to pay them the betting money for the match played last week, and said that if he cannot afford to pay he should not have indulged in betting.

This led to a quarrel between Ijaz and the group, and the latter allegedly assaulted Ijaz with a cricket bat and wickets.

Angered by the assault, Ijaz along with his friends Riyaz, Asif, Taseef and about 13 other people from the local mosque and organizations allegedly barged into Anil's house and caused damage. They also reportedly assaulted Anil's father Sadashiva Acharya, mother Lalita, his younger sister and other family members, apart from beating up Anil's neighbours Devaraj Sujith and Nikhil too. They were all admitted to hospital with serious injuries and case was registered by the locals.

On Tuesday, during Eid Milad procession, it is alleged that a few people who were part of the procession pelted stones at Krishna temple at Kulai. As the news spread, a big crowd gathered at the spot and began a flash protest, but after the intervention of police, the situation was brought under control.

As a result, several community leaders rushed to the spot and heated discussions between community leaders and the police took place, but the matter was resolved through talks.

On Tuesday night, an emergency meeting was held in Suratkal police station in the presence of representatives from both communities, Panambur ACP Ravi Kumar and Suratkal SI Nataraj. The incident was scrutinized by the two groups. BJP Mangalore north president Ramesh, Hindu community leaders Sathish Munchhur, Ganapati Bangera, Jayaram Acharya, Umesh Kotian, Yagnesh Aithal, SDPI leader Abubakker Kulai, mosque president Abubakker, Sharif, Ibrahim and others were present.

Panambur ACP Ravi Kumar issued a warning that stringent action would be taken against those spreading rumours or leveling baseless allegations in a bid to spark communal tension, no matter who those persons may be.

Gambling ends in disaster, on the top of that betting without money, is stupid and inviting trouble. Play and enjoy the game
If money comes, the game will not be natural, internal misunderstanding lead to conflicts

Forget about the people who comment here, Daijiworld don't know the true story. Hope i can help you.

A few weeks back there was a cricket match between omshakthi vs tippu Cricketers Kulai.. Omshakthi won the match and lost team tippu had to pay 7000 for them.. Due to money shortage they said they will pay tomo. so omshakthi player agreed to pay in 2 days. The next day when the players went to pay half of the money, omshakthi crickets assault them, saying, we don't need half, we need full. and if u dint pay full, will inform some rowdy group of kodikeri to take the money. So the tippu cricketers said, ya u can do whatever u want and return back to their place. Next day one of the omshakthi players came and ask for money and said, u give half now. Remaining u give later. So tippu player said, now we returned all of their money, we ll collect back n give it to u tomo.. So the next day when around 25 players of omshakthi came to shop of riyaz and assualt his brother, and asked for riyaz. Later in the evening when riyaz ijaz and fayaz was gone in a bike, they stopped and started discussing about money. In that discussion. anil hit ijaz by wicket and at the moment some of tippu player saw it and ran towards them and omshakthi player ran away.. At the moment as anil house was near, they thought they may b went to his house. So they went near his house, but they dint not enter inside the house..they shouted, saying were in Anil, but no one was injured and no one assault or hit anil mother, sister or father This is the story happen in Kulai.

Now my Question is, where did the communal come in between this? Its a argument n fight between two cricket teams.. Why they gave complaint saying they hit women etc? Why they created a fake story that they throw stones to Bajana Bandir? Media don't know what is the truth, den why they make it communal..

The fight was among friends over a cricket betting, members of a family which were not at all involved were attacked in their own house, a temple was attacked for no reason at all! Is this the way the communities should behave on a holy festival day? Only leaders of both the communities can guide their youths for better or worse! Political leaders will only concentrate on their vote banks! Hatred and bloodshed will lead to nowhere!

Gone are the days of co-existence.

We used to move (Christians, Hindu & Muslim) friends as one team and used wine & dine without any hassles or provocative attitude.

There was one incident (during early 70's) Hindu/Muslim riots and who was benefitting out of it were only the rouges or goondas looting and robbing other's property. That created panic among the society, but thank God, everything became normal within a few days
I am away from home town since 1975 but I love my place. God bless Mangalore & the people.

WHY D.C.IS SIMPLY WATCHING THE DRAMA WHEN MUSLIM YOUTHS ATTACK LADIES INSIDE THEIR HOUSE AND GIVING SIMPLE REASONS LIKE CRICKET BETTING AS EXCUSE. AFTER ALL, IBRAHIM WAS POSTED FOR THIS REASON BY SIDDU GOVT. TO BEAT HINDUS.

The greatest gift of BJP, RSS, BD and all related organizations who have created an atmosphere of hatred and enmity in our Mangalore and DK, once very peaceful and joyful. It is now proved that we do not require external enemies to destroy our country if these organizations are not banned and stopped from spreading hatred among our own Indians. I can say a very strong conspiracy is in existence in and around Mangalore & if the fuming tension is not defused immediately, people of both communities will have to pay a very high price. Home Minister should stop snoring and wake up immediately to take control of the situation.

Until we have community leaders who spread hatred on communal lines, we will have innocent people following them without knowledge.

And when the problem comes, all leaders disappear to face the consequences on their own.

It is so sad to know that communal incidents in the name cricket, eve teasing, etc. are increasing in Mangalore, which is not a good sign for peace and communal/religious harmony.

A small spark may turn into a wildfire if not controlled. I hope and pray that people will come to senses and live peacefully.

COMMUNAL ISSUES FOR SILLY REASONS HAVE BECOME A DAILY OCCURRENCE THESE DAYS. I AM SURE THESE ARE POLITICALLY MOTIVATED BY SOME VESTED INTERESTS. THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR THE CIVILIZED SOCIETY IN A SECULAR DEMOCRACY. SUCH CASES WERE NEVER HEARD OF IN THE PAST. TRUST ME, ALL THIS STARTED ONLY AFTER THE BJP GOVT. IN KARNATAKA AND CONSTANT PROVOCATION OF MINORITIES BY RADICAL ELEMENTS LIKE DR. KALLADKA BHAT.
