Bantwal, Jan 15: "Snatching away people's right to water is similar to snatching away their right to live. Netravati river diversion project will lead to destruction of the river and of the lives of people in the coastal region. In this respect, the people of the district should be prepared for a campaign to facilitate life in the area," said Sri Vidyaprasannateertha Swamiji of Subrahmanya Math.

The swamiji spoke after launching a district-wide protest by Jeevanadi – Netravati protection committee under the slogan ‘Etthinahole Yojane Virodhisi, Nadi Ulisi, Jeevasankula Rakshisi’ on Tuesday, January 14 in front of Bantwal Sri Thirumala Venkatramana temple after worship of the river.

“The damaging of natural resources amounts to invitation for destruction. No human being, nature or God will tolerate interference with nature. Leave the environment alone. Government should take steps to give life rather than snatching it. It is a question of life and death. All the people in the region should support this struggle”, he said.

M G Hegde, chief of protest committee said that the project was an excuse for corruption. “It is a project which gives rise to corruption. With it the river water will dry up and the pockets of corrupt officials and politicians will be filled. Only underground pipes will go to Kolar”, he said.

Professor S G Mayya gave technical details of the project and said that it is a bad project. “Such a project cannot be successful in any part of the world. He expressed surprise at the silence of elected representatives at the project which is being prepared without research, survey and study of its pros and cons. People are still in slumber. While there is scarcity of drinking water here, the project of diverting the source of water is unscientific and is a technical failure. Unified efforts are required to get it stopped”, he said.

Senior author Erya Laxminarayana Alva presided over the programme. Modankapu church parish priest Maxim Noronha led the prayer. Vasanthi Chandappa, president of town municipal council, Rohitaksha Rai, Purushothama, Mamatha Gatti, Padmashekar Jain, Manur Laxmana Kamath, Nemiraja Shetty, Mayilappa Salian, Harikrishna Bantwal, Pius Rodrigues, Vasu Poojary, Praveen B., Abbas Ali, Naizil Pereira, P V Mohan, Vasudeva Boloor, Yogish Jeppu, Dinesh Holla, Suresh Shetty, Richard Menezes, Badruddin, Niranjan Rai, Uttam Kumar, Denis D’ Silva and others were present.

Committee president, former MLA Vijaya Kumar welcomed. Hussain Katipalla proposed vote of thanks.

Sri Vidyaprasannateertha Swamiji has called upon people to protest giving up reservations though the nature of the people here is mild. He said that birds and animals also have silently protested against the proposed project.

Matter of fact, that the river got created is due to some natural balance, diverting that is a disaster, we are going to unbalance it. It will hamper the ecosystem of the whole western ghats. So called "research reports" are biased and favoring politicians/business men. We need to think these type of projects holistically, not only human beings have to survive, we have let-live flora and fauna, animals also have equal rights to live on this planet. In Uttar Kannada itself I can see a drastic change in the ecosystem due to couple of such big projects, we are not seeing any birds/animals these days compare to our childhood. We cannot create nature, lets fight for protecting it.....

The only solution to all the problems of Tulu Nadu is to have a separate state - Tulu Nadu state. Tuluvas and in Konkanas of Tulu Nadu lack self respect. our state is ruled by robbers of Bangalore who are there to loot and involve in partiality to our tulu nadu. When malyalis have kerala, kannadigas Karnataka, so do others, why do tuluvas lack basic self respect?

    (1) There is some credit to the fact that rain water going to sea can be diverted inland. But, other options need to be considered. Let other parts of the state improve their lakes by making the lakes deeper and not allowing sewage into lakes and building houses/housing colonies this way they can harvest the rain water. Can give plenty of examples in Hassan/Bangalore other places where, is the situation.
    (2) This project to reverse lift water will take an enormous amount of electricity.
    (3) The next thing is a lot of water wars. Expect Water disputes.

If there is Plenty, then we can share, but if the flow is stopped with dams, then it will cause the destruction of the ecosystem which was present for millions of years.
Construction of pipelines will cause destruction of nature by way of felling of trees as the road is constructed to move machinery & equipment in ecologically sensitive Ghat section.
Rain water harvesting to provide drinking water is the best feasible alternative, but big projects line pockets of many unlike local resources & manpower is utilized for construction of check dams, pits associated with rain water conservation which is only Lifelong solution than this illogical project.

LET US BE FAIR ENOUGH TO SHARE WATER WITHIN OUR OWN BROTHERN WITHIN OUR OWN STATE:
If the rainwater is simply flowing to the sea un-utilized then the diversion of the river is imperative to the dry places for farming or to the cities where drinking water scarcity is.

In diverting the river those depending on for farming, electricity and for drinking of water should not be hindered.

Precisely, this proposal was started from JDS, BJP AND NOW CONGRESS. All are favoring this project. If the fair deal of sharing water is allowed to our own brothers instead of simply flowing to the sea why can’t we allow diversion of the river to the needed place?

We have to rise above politics and selfishness in the matter of water, which is most necessary item to every human being.

THE SELFISHNESS IN THE PEOPLE IS SO MUCH THAT WE NEED ELECTRICITY BY POLLUTING OTHER PLACES EITHER FROM COAL MOUNTED, THERMAL POWER OR NUCLEAR POWER. BUT MY NEIGHBORHOOD MUST BE CLEAN AND UN-POLLUTED.

I need rice by selling my Areca-nut. But I cannot farm rice because it is costly.
Areca-nut farming is easy. But can we eat Areca-nut and quench our hunger.

In front of my home garbage dump box should not be there. But in-front of others homes, garbage dump box will be there never mind.

The movement against diversion of Nethravathi should be a non political one because politicians of DK are not trustworthy. So people like Vijaya Kumar Shetty,M.G.Hegde should be allowed to sneak into this movement.Politicians are ready to sell Nethravathi to anyone who give them benefit. This has happened in the past.Cases like UPCL,Mega power plant proposed at Niddodi etc.,are classic examples.
