Kasargod, Jan 17: A fire that ripped through a building at fish market road here on Thursday January 16 destroyed two godowns and seven shops, altogether causing an estimated loss of Rs 50 lac.

The godowns are located on the first floor of an old building, while the shops are below.

It is said that the fire sparked off early morning when there was no one in the shops and godowns.

A passerby noticed the flames and informed the fire service and alerted the people in the vicinity.

Fire tenders from Kasargod and Uppala rushed to the spot, but by the time they doused the flames, the damage had been caused.

The shops and godowns contained fruits, vegetables, stationery and other items.

The cause for the fire is said to be short circuit.

Kasargod town police have registered a case.
