Karkala, Jan 18: "Illegal stone quarries are operating all over Karkala taluk right in the presence of Udupi deputy commissioner, department of geology, officials of pollution control board and officials of the forest department. It is necessary for the government to wake up and take action," said Xavier D’ Mello, member of taluk panchayat.

He was speaking at a press meet held at a hotel in the city on Friday, January 17.

Revealing the information obtained by him under Right to Information Act, he said, "There are 189 red stone and building stone quarries in the taluk. Only eleven quarries among them are on lease and all the remaining quarries are functioning illegally. Besides that, the legal quarries functioning now are in deemed forest area.

"However the illegal quarries are functioning without hindrance. Even though land resources are being robbed on such a massive scale, neither the taluk administration nor the district administration has taken any action against it. The department of geology is working for the quarries," he said.

“Nandalike survey number 116 of Belman, number 31p2 and 133 of Sooda gram have ten quarries. All the quarries in the three survey numbers are in deemed forest area. Stones weighing 2,500 tons are being supplied from these quarries to Navayug Company on a daily basis.

"The department of mines has ordered to stop mining of several mines coming under the survey numbers stating that they come under the area of deemed forests. They have also passed on the information to area tahsildar and police for action. However, why is it that the rules have not been applied to other quarries?," he asked.

"The stone quarries in Kalya have once again been allowed to function. However, no permission is given to use explosives but explosives are piled up near it," he said.

"The Karnataka high court had ordered for suspension of all crushers on July 31, 2013. That order is also not being implemented. The irresponsibility of the officials is to be blamed for it. The case will be taken up to the high court," he said.

“Quarrying is now being allowed in Hosmar also. This indicates the discriminatory policy of the officials and we will be meeting the chief minister to urge him to ban quarries in the area that are bring loss to the government and to take action against guilty officials," he said.

Udupi block Congress vice-president Aveline R Louis urged to stop illegal quarrying. “Though we are not against legal quarries, we will be fighting against illegal ones," he said.

Block Congress organizing secretary Vivekananda Shenoy, taluk panchayat member Sujit Shetty and Vandana Kuntalpady were present.

Govt wants stone quarries to operate because it needs stone for public works and development activity going.

On the issue of legal and illegal , due to new rules and regulations introdused, it has become very difficult and time consuming process to get a permission and clearances. Adding to this ,allegations on any of quarry activity would again delay the process of acquiring the permissions. Stone and aggregates, sand and gravals are the most essential commodities used very largely in building everything which we see and touch everyday life. Some people dont understand the importance of this and start playing mischievous and make controversial statements. The govt must act firmly and give permissions immediately to those quarries to fuction smoothly inthe interest of the development activity of nation. Because ours is the developing country and several lakhs of people and families depend and earn their livelihood on such development projects. Environment and ecology is another part of our life and we must respect and we must conserve and develop it. For this govt must come up with firm steps and introduce new projects to develop forest in other areas to compensate the damage made to the eco system by quarrying activities. Because quarrying could be done only where the mineral deposit is there and which could be extracted feasibly and profitably. But the forest can be grown anywhere. Development activity cannot be stopped as the public and our country's vast population wants it. In this broader perspective and vision govt has to make policies to balance growth and development and maintain eco system.

We have many like this man come up with issues only when the elections are around the corner. May be he expects a ticket to contest elections. Where was this man so long 98% publicity trick. it was happening under his nose so long n he is waking up now! if there was another year for elections he will wait another year for this press conference. Yes the issue is very much grave, consequences on geological imbalance is already seen not only by distinction of stones but much grave because of the deforestation. You should not wake up when the end is near wash your eyes when they blur

I fully agree with Mr. Xavier D'mello. The illegal stone quarries are being operated in and around belman not only with the knowledge of the deputy commissioner and geology dept. officials, but also with the knowledge of the former Congress MLA of karkala. Many people know about the illegal stone quarries but no one raised a concern except Belman Xavier D'Mello.I appreciate Xavier d'mello for raising his concern so publicly without any fear when there are senior leaders in the party who are keeping quiet because they are benefitted in one way or the other by the illegal stone quarries.

This is time for Xavier D'Mello and join AAP. I feel he can make changes in and around belman if he joins AAP
