Clamour for Rahul to contest Lok Sabha polls from Karnataka

Clamour for Rahul to contest Lok Sabha polls from Karnataka

By V S Karnic

Bangalore, Jan 18 (IANS):
With the Congress plenary deciding that Rahul Gandhi will lead the party campaign in the elections, there is renewed clamour in Karnataka that he contest the polls from the state.

Speculation that Rahul Gandhi seems to be interested in entering the next Lok Sabha from Karnataka started in a section of the party's state unit about three months ago. However, no one gave any reason for starting such talk when there was no indication from Rahul Gandhi to that effect - for instance, frequent visits to the state.

In fact, talk that Rahul Gandhi may contest from Karnataka started much before the Aam Admi Party (AAP) announced, after its stunning debut in the Delhi assembly polls, that it will field a candidate against him in the Gandhi family stronghold of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

There were frequent meetings, though, with state party leaders in New Delhi till last May about the strategy and candidates for the Karnataka assembly polls, which the Congress won by dethroning the Bharatiya Janata Party, and later mostly about ministry formation.

The party has not completed the ministry-making exercise as three vacancies still exist. Karnataka can have a 34-member ministry, including the chief minister.

Several state Congress leaders have been aiding the speculation with frequent comments that they would be happy to see Rahul Gandhi contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Karnataka as Indira Gandhi had won from Chikmagalur in 1978 after she lost in Rai Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and the party was routed in 1977. Also, Sonia Gandhi bagged the Bellary seat in the 1999 elections. She, however, retained the Amethi seat which too she had won.

Such comments led to further speculation about the possible constituencies Rahul Gandhi could contest from or was supposedly interested in fighting from.

Two constituencies are being mentioned - Chikmagalur which now is actually Chikmagalur-Udupi and Mysore-Kodagu. Interestingly, both Chikmagalur and Kodagu districts are known for their coffee estates. Mysore is known as a city of palaces while Udupi is a famous pilgrimage centre for its temple of Hindu god Krishna.

Both the seats are now held by Congressmen - K. Jayaprakash Hegde represents Chikmagalur-Udupi and A. H. Vishwanath holds the Mysore-Kodagu seat.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Vishwanath on Wednesday lent their voice to the speculation, telling reporters that Rahul Gandhi can contest from anywhere in the country and he supports the idea of him fighting the Lok Sabha polls from Karnataka.

The state Congress leaders' enthusiasm apparently stems from the expectation that Rahul Gandhi contesting from the state will brighten the party's chances of bagging the maximum number out of the 28 Lok Sabha seats from the state, particularly after the party returned to power in Karnataka on its own in last May's assembly polls after nine years.

Despite widespread belief that the national mood is against the Congress because of various corruption scandals of the United Progressive Alliance it leads, the state party leaders are aiming to win at least 20 seats compared to just six in the 2009 elections.

The tally has gone up to eight after two wins in the bypolls last August from Bangalore Rural and Mandya, around 80 km from here, constituencies considered as the strongholds of Janata Dal-Secular of former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda.

With the Congress culture of leaving the final decision on crucial matters to the party president, it is now over to Sonia Gandhi to fulfill the wishes of the party's Karnataka unit.

    Dear Mr. Rahul:

Even though I did not meet you, but your Grand mother, I was passing through the high school, in New England, USA. Since then I always felt you are one day will sure to become the Prime Minister of India. Now its your time and you will be the next PM of India for several years. I am personally praying for your victory. What ever the people may comment against you it will all be in vain. I admire Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Manamohan Singh for their sincerity that includes you to without blemish and making derogatory statements like other politicians. I too do not like to make wrong statements on our opponents. We only pray for the VICTORY OF CONGRESS, so that we Christians and Moslems and minorities can live in peace in our great nation of India. God bless you Rahul and when you win I want you to call me to Delhi.

100 % sure Rahul has very very less chance of becoming PM. Doubt of he contesting from Karnataka, & even doubt of winning here, unless he buys votes. Anyway, they are good in gathering(buying) votes with vitamin M.

I don't understand the mentality of the congress, state leaders. Why should they get a discarded baggage like Rahul Gandhi who will bring with him the image of corruption, mis governance, inexperience, lack of decision making ability and then will ruin the congress chances in Karnataka..Without Rahul, Congress were well placed to win at least 15 seats, now if Rahul contest from Karnataka, they probably will go below 10 seats..

90% of the comments are from Sangh supporters. I do not understand why they get so frustrated and nervous when there is a news about Congress or Rahul Gandhi.

They say Rahul is incapable, then they should ignore him. Whatever the abusive comments made by Sangh supporters against Rahul, people can see the qualitative difference when Rahul speaks and Prime Minister nominee speaks.

Mocking and making fun of others is considered as a great speech by Sangh supporters

Kunderji why BJP has to get nervous of Rahul. Its the time for congress to get nervous after loosing badly in the recent assembly elections in all the 4 states. You say PM nominee makes fun of others. Making fun of others was started by congress. If you cannot accept others making fun of congies then advise your congies too not to make fun of others.

    Dear Mr. Praveen,

I do not blame Prime minister nominee. He is coming from modest background and person’s origin remains with him whatever height he reaches.

However, when a leader speaks, he should be very careful not to make derogatory comments or mocking of opponents. I have not seen Sonia Gandhi, Dr. Singh or Rahul Gandhi is making any derogatory remarks on a Prime Minister nominee in the recent past.

Mocking has become so much that Prime Minister nominee makes a peculiar voice and now it has become a habit with him. Every word in a sentence in Hindi is stressed so much like Karrrr….Darrr and it looks so funny as we are watching some drama or Hirekathe. Leaders should give a serious talk and not sarcastic as the prime minister nominee. Anyhow, this is my personal opinion.

Some people like such speeches and specially Sangh supporters consider this as great speech. I am not here to change this opinion of theirs.

How come Pappu is insecure about his home constituency after being elected form there several time ? Has he not done any development work there over the years that he doesn't deserve to win from there ? A new comer in the politics has literally drived out Pappu from his home. Rahul has lost to Kumar Vishwas before the election itself. Now he is coming to fool another constituency in Karnataka. For that he has to choose a very backward, less literate constituency. Even then his chances are remote. IF by fluke, he wins then he will not back to that constituency for another 5 years. Just before the election, he will come and do a Night out at some poor mans house, thus burdening that poor man to make arrangement for this guys dinner.
