Mangalore, May 15: The Naxalite activities in the western range may soon see the appointment of H N Satyanarayana Rao as Inspector General of Police of the western range, following his visit to Hebri and Karkala on Sunday May 14.

The post of the IGP has been vacant since the retirement of K S Suresh Babu on April 30. The appointment of Raghavendra Auradkar, IGP (Intelligence) was also withdrawn later. Now Rao, presently serving as Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration), Bangalore, has been called upon to look in to the problems posed by Naxalites in the region.

Rao was serving as IGP of Western Range including Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Chikmaglur districts and had also headed the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) during his term as IGP. His present appointment also owes to the fact that the post of SP in Udupi district is yet to be filled after the transfer of S Murugan to Mysore.

Rao has already started anti-Naxal operations, with a visit to the ANF camp and to the house of Bhoja Shetty, which was attacked by the Naxalites on Saturday May 13 at Hebri. He has also instructed the police to accelerate combing operations in the region.
