Central govt grants minority status to Jain community

New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS): The Jain community was Monday granted minority status by the central government which will enable them to avail benefits in government schemes and programmes.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting here, an official release here said.

The decision comes a day after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi took up this issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

A group of Jains had met Rahul Gandhi Sunday to press for their long-standing demand for minority status and he then spoke to the prime minister.

Once recognized as a minority, the around 50 lakh strong community would get a share in central funds earmarked for welfare programmes and scholarships for minorities. They can also manage and administer their own educational institutions.

The community already has minority status in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan but the new decision extends this across the country.

Reservation system, perhaps makes Lower class stay backward, then getting improved. Of the total employees in IT in abroad gone from India, most of them are from General category. As Dinesh Poojary has pointed out, it is necessary to survive, which has made them to work harder & harder...In Government jobs due to reservations, scope for general merit is almost nil, & for them it is 'Do or Die' option. You can find a good number of them in IT, Medical, Engineering, entrepreneur, Industrialists, etc. No foreign company looks at whether you come from reserving category or not. They just want efficiency & quality in service. Perhaps, because of this point Brahmins, Konkanies, Sarswaths, etc. have been shining.

Our government so far have failed in this matter in improving the skill, & most of time trying to pull the legs of General merit class, & uplift Lower classes with help Reservations. We do not need reservations, but just need the opportunity to grow.

And now, Pappu wants Jains to be d a minority - which they are. At 0.4% of the Indian population, they are a clear minority.

However, the community has a 94 % literacy and contributes 24% of the income tax collection of India.

In this context, it is no way justifiable to them a religious minority and treat them on par with other economically disadvantaged groups. I hope better sense prevails and the governments a special category for them (and Parsis and Jews too, perhaps) that would allow them to preserve their culture and religion without eating into extant employment or educational opportunities, and without the benefit of reservations.

Worst part is,Rahul Gandhi took up this issue with Mauni baba and the Union Cabinet okay-ed it immediately.

One more community is added to minority list, like on strong agitation, OBC was added to backward castes to avail Govt grants!

I am staying in a locality, where there are a good number of Jains.
During the celebration of Hindu festivals, I came to know they are different from Hindus!
    They were not contributing
nor taking part in celebrations like, Ganeshotsav, Holi, Gokulashtami etc., except for Diwali (Deepawali).
If Country has a policy of unity in diversity, then there is no problem for many are alienated from the main stream.
If this addition to the minority is viewed as a problem, then adding more and more castes to the ever growing list of backward castes also is a problem.

When sensible leaders of the country want to go forward in terms of ECONOMY, EDUCATION, MANUFACTURING, INDUSTRY, SOCIAL REFORMATION etc, RG wants to go forward in terms of CASTE, RELIGION, RESERVATION,COLOR etc.

Jains are top performers in EDUCATION and BUSINESS. Jain leaders who approached RG on the reservation, have put their people on shame.

When you give reservation to certain people, you are making those people lazy and incompetent.

I should thank congress for not giving reservation to Hindus. Because of this we hindus have occupied TOP TECHNICAL/MEDICAL/SCIENCE POSITIONS in USA, UK, CANADA, GERMANY etc.

You will hardly find any SC/ST class people in BUSINESS, SCIENCE and RESEARCH field why? They were not allowed to reach till there. Govt has truncated their ambition level by giving them the things easy.

Why do you find more brahmins in top posts? It is not because they are born intelligent. For them it has become inevitable to study and work hard due to narrowed opportunity. In Govt sector, they have almost zero opportunity. Naturally the brahmin will aspire for big from the childhood itself..!

If you had given reservation for Narayana Murthy, he would have been employed in BHEL or Railways. No Infosys would have been born!

If you had given reservation for Devi Shetty, he would have been a doctor in the Mangalore Govt Hospital.

Bharat Cooperative Bank would not have been born if Jaya Suvarna was given a clerical post under reservation quota.

If you had given reservation for Neeraj Patil, he would have been a doctor in Gulbarga Hospital.

If you had given reservation for CNR Rao, he would have been science lecturer in Mysore University.

    Dear all by Hindu brothers,

We do not want any reservations. Let us not become idle. Let us work hard and build the strong country.

I am proud to be Hindu. I don't want any reservation. I will fight with my HARDWORK and INTELLIGENCE. I support reservation if given only on the economical status of a person.

Mr Prashanth, what is problem with minority status given to Jains ? Why you are not remembering elite class people like Voras/ Khojas/ Memons from Muslim religion ? When a minority status is given population is considered . In fact, Muslims are almost 25 %, which I will say is second majority even after that they enjoy minority status . Why you do not oppose this ?MAJORITY JAINS FROM RAJSTHAN AND GUJARAT ONLY ARE REACH. JAINS FROM KARNATAKA, MP AND MAHARASHTRA RURAL AREA ARE VERY WEAK FINANCIALLY WHICH YOU PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW.WHEN NO. OF JAINS HAVE PAID TAX TO GOVERNMENT IN BILLIONS WHAT PROBLEM THERE IS IF SOME POOR JAINS DEMAND SCHOLARSHIP FROM GOVERNMENT FOR STUDY PURPOSE. REMEMBER SC/ST/SEBC ARE GIVEN ALMOST 50 %AND THAT IS IN EDUCATION AS WELL AS GOVT JOBS. BUT FOR MINORITIES ONLY IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES ESTABLISHED BY THEM ONLY UPTO 50 % SETAS THERE MAY BE BUT NO RESERVATION IN GOVT JOBS.SO YOU DO NOT WORRY. YOUR JOB RIGHTS ARE NOT TAKEN BY JAINS ATLEAST.

To Mr. Ravi B Shenava, Mangalore.
There are many places which were originally places of worship for Jains. You can read Swami Dayanands book " Satyarth Prakash" It can be revealed from this book that from the time period of Shankarachrya so many jain places of worship are converted to hindu place of worship. For example Badrinath houses idol of Rushabhdev first tirtahnkar of Jains. Kesariyaji , Rajsthan is another temple with idol of Rushabhdev. There was conflict between Swetambar and Digambar Jains . Meanwhile pandas of kesariyaji started quoting Rushabhdev as incarnation of Vishnu and started spreading this message to Bhils of the region and now state govt of Rajsthan is having its ownership. Supreme court has told it is a jain temple even after that state govt says no it is hindu temple.Tirupati Balaji is one more temple which is originally a Jain temple. Show me any scripture showing Balaji as incarnation of Vishnu. Manjunath in Karnatak there is idol of Bahubali , son of Jain Tirthankar Rushabhdev. But pandas have started quoting him Shiva. Show me such naked statue of Lord Shiva. If Jains have control of any Hindu institution they will leave it . But considering original history Hindus should give temples of Jains to them .
