Mangalore, Jan 25: In a bizarre incident, the driver of a city-based school took the bus on a joy ride around the city during school hours and met with an accident at Gorigudde.

The driver, whose identity is not known, reportedly took out the empty school bus at around 11.30 am and drove around the city. The conductor remained in the school.

Sources said that he drove via Valencia and when he reached Gorigudda, he hit the bus against a wall located near a school. He then began to take reverse and when people around began to shout, he stopped the bus and tried to escape.

Immediately, the public gathered and caught hold of him.

The school authorities were contacted and the driver was handed over to the principal who arrived at the spot.

The reason for the driver's action is yet to be ascertained. He was not inebriated but eyewitnesses said that he seemed mentally unstable. He even sat on a bike parked nearby, and at another instance undressed himself, said an eyewitness.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident. The locals however expressed fear that had the accident taken place a few minutes later when the nearby school left on recess, the tragedy would have been major.

The school authorities promised to provide medical attention to the driver and probe the incident.

Is a utter disgrace to the school management. There are no any safety concerns. A driver of a school bus has lot of responsibility for the safety of kids. School Management should ensure they employ the right person, train him with extra skills of not only safe driving, his behavior with kids, his hygiene and manners. He should be in a position to advise kids on their safety on the bus, crossing the roads, etc. Probably parents need to bring pressure on the school authorities

It seems he is mentally not sound.
Don't blame him for shabby looks, note carefully- he is "Maladhari" to visit "Shabarimalai".
Schools need to verify drivers' health physically as well as mentally & see his past records if possible to see if he is accident prone. Then only appoint as the lives of many depend on his safe driving skill.

Please post some sensible comments. It's the question of children's safety. May be the driver was drunk or in unstable kind of mind which could be due to various reasons. Uniform is a good suggestion and must be neat and clean. The sight of the driver would scare the children. Ultimately it is the responsiblity of the school authorities.

Please change the driver to avoid more losses.
It might be mandatory to pass some rules and regulations from the Government/related department for School Bus Drivers such as Medical Certificate, Fitness and Proper Address Proof.u
We should feel safe that Our Kids are travelling with safe hands at least.
