Bangalore, May 17: Udupi-born Prof Bailur Sheena Sherigar of the department of Industrial Chemistry of the Kuvempu University, Shimoga has been appointed new vice chancellor of the same university.

State higher education minister D H Shankaramurthy announced here on Tuesday that earlier on the day governor and ex-officio chancellor T N Chaturvedi had issued the official order of appointment of Prof Sherigar.

The appointment has been based on the recommendation made by a competent committee commissioned to shortlist the names of suitable incumbents.

Profile

Prof Sherigar has published more than 100 research papers in National and Interanational Journals and under his guidance more than 20 students have been awarded PhD & M.Phil. He is visiting Professor for Wichita State University, Kansas, USA and has 3 years' agreement to research with them. At present he is the Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology and Professor and Head of the Dept of Of Industrial Chemistry at Kuvempu University.

Born Bailur Sheena Devadiga in 1945 in Udupi, he did his BSc in 1965, LLB in 1969 and MSc in 1976 and obtained  PhD in Electro Chemistry in 1987. He started his teahing career as Professor at MGM College Udupi.
Thereafter he moved to GovernmentCollege Tumkur as Professor and was invited to join the new University of Mangalore as Lecturer in Chemistry and served there from 1985 to 1994.

In 1994 yet another new University named after the Poet-Laureate Kuvempu (K V Puttappa) welcomed him to be the Professor and Chairman of PG Studies and Research in Industrial Chemistry.

Brilliant and research-oriented Professor Dr Sherigar has not only more than 100 scientific papers to his credit, but has also contributed 6 articles in Popular Science magazines in Kannada and has authored the fascinating world of Polymers.

His honors and awards include Grantee, Board of Research in Nuclear Science, Department of Atomic Energy(1996-1999) and appreciation award from Indian Association of Analytical Scientists, Mumbai in 1998.

He was the member of the Syndicate from August 1996 to September 1998 and member of the Senate from 1995 to 1997, and of the Academic Council from 1994 onwards.

The widely-travelled Professor started his foreign sojourn with a visit to Germany in 1999. A man who believes more in deeds than words, Dr Sherigar was honoured by the Devadiga Sangha, Mumbai for his excellence in Education during its Platinum Jubilee Celebration in 2002.

Kuvempu University, Shimoga, Karnataka State, honoured Prof Dr B S Sherigar with 'Sadana Purskara' award for his distinguished achievement in teaching & research at a grand function held at 'Jnana Sahyadri ' during the Birth centenary day celebration of National Poet Kuvempu on 29th Dec.2003.

Dr B S Sherigar is maried to Jayshree, a postgraduate and has two professionally educated daughters- Mahima, an engineer and Charita, a doctor.
