New Delhi/Mangalore, Jan 26: Wing commander Darryl Castelino, the braveheart from Kinnigoli near Mangalore who laid down his life for his country during the Uttarakhand flood relief operations in June last year, has been posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, the second highest peacetime gallantry award in the country.

He has has been conferred the award for saving passengers and central armed forces personnel last year before his Mi-17V5 chopper crashed killing all 20 personnel on board.

The chopper Darryl was commanding, which was carrying army personnel, was moving towards a temporary air base in Gauchar in Uttarakhand, when it crashed near Jungle Chatti, north of Gaurikund.

Hailing from Kinnigoli, the family later shifted to Vakola, Santa Cruz in Mumbai, where Darryl grew up. Born on November 2, 1975, Darryl was a student of Holy Cross High School, Kurla (W), Mumbai.

Son of the late Herald Castelino and Leena Castelino, Darryl was married to Jyothi from Kundapur and the couple have two children - son Ethan (7) and daughter Angelina (4).

He served the IAF as wing commander and was posted in Kolkata at the time of the tragedy.

    Thank You Darryl for doing your duty towards your mother land. Hope the blessings of all people you saved will be with your family, especially your wife and children s. ( Mr William all crew members of that chopper have been awarded with some gallantry awards)My request is to name any road or circle in the name of Wing Commander Darryl and Flt Lt Ronald Serrao (Who died in a Jaguar crash in 2007).
