Udupi: Republic Day celebrated with pomp and gaiety

Udupi, Jan 26: The Udupi district administration celebrated the 65th Republic Day with much pomp and fanfare at MGM College grounds here on Sunday January 26.

District incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake hoisted the National Flag and received the guard of honour.

Addressing the gathering, he said, "Anna Bhagya scheme has been implemented well in the district, with as many as 18,783 Anthyodaya and 1,93,624 BPL card holders are receiving rice and wheat for Rs 1 per kg.  By December 2013 end Rs 8,61,59,665 worth of rice (1,93,624 quintals) and wheat (18,443 quintals) was distributed to BPL card holders. Anthodhaya card holders were given Rs 88 lac worth of rice (32,376 quintals) and wheat (6,696 quintals)."
 
He further said, "Ksheera Bhagya is also being implemented successfully in the district in schools. As many as 121 beneficiaries like unmarried women of above 40 years, widows, and divorcees have been identified under the Manaswini scheme. Also, Maitri Scheme for sexual minorities has been implemented in the district. Under the Bhagyalakshmi scheme in the district 24,259 girl children have been identified, among which families of 22,934 have been issued bonds."

Sorake said, "The aim of Karnataka government is to make the state hut-free. The government has also planned to provide houses to economically and socially backward people in future. To support girl students in education, the government has planned to give Rs 2 each day to each student of 1st standard. In Udupi there are 2,625 students studying 1st standard."

On tourism prospects in Udupi, he said, "Eight places have been identified as tourism spots in the district; and already an action plan of Rs 975 lac has been prepared. To support the youth, the state government will be holding Yuva Jana Mela in Yellur from February 1 to February 3. Also, a report to relax the CRZ guidelines will be submitted to the central government," he said.

On this occasion MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, ZP president Upendra Nayak, Udupi CMC president Yuvaraj, vice-president Amrutha Krishnamurthy, Gowri Pujarthi and others were present.

Addition SP Santosh Kumar and Ajekar ASI Sadanand Bhandary who have been selected for the President's Medal were felicitated on the occasion.

Gynecologist Dr Damayanti Krishna Mohan, LIC officer Ramesh S Kamath, assistant project officer of Udupi zilla panchayat Dr Uday Shetty, CMC group D worker H Shyamari, assistant agricultural officer Chandrashekar Shetty, first grade worker of DC office Yashavantha Kumar and sports achievers were honoured.

An attractive cultural programme was presented by school students. March-past by various teams was another highlight.
