Karnataka's Tipu Sultan tableau on Republic Day sparks war on Twitter

New Delhi, Jan 27 (NDTV): Tipu Sultan has become a hotly debated topic on social media after Karnataka's tableau for Sunday's Republic Day parade glorified the 18th century ruler with a complex legacy.

Moments after a giant bust of Tipu Sultan brandishing a sword glided down Rajpath on Sunday, with the commentary describing him as a hero who died fighting the British in 1799, a war of words erupted on Twitter.

Many critics argued on the micro-blogging site that it was wrong to pay tribute to a "tyrant" responsible for killing thousands.

"If we accept a Tipu Sultan float, there is absolutely no reason not to have floats of British monarchs and viceroys," tweeted Barbarian Indian.

"Numerous accounts of Tipu Sultan killing, torturing, converting Hindus, destroying temples. Also of his fight against the British. Dark, complex (sic)," posted Abhijit Majumdar.

Others like Nakul Shenoy wrote, "Happy to see Tipu Sultan being featured in the Karnataka tableau for the Republic Parade. Politics has ensured we have mostly forgotten him."

Within hours, the battle of tweets turned into a history lesson with people on both sides of the argument posting links to essays and articles on the ruler known as the "Tiger of Mysore."

Tipu Sultan was last in the news in 2004, when liquor baron Vijay Mallya bought his sword in an auction for Rs.1.5 crore. His life was also the subject of a TV show in 1990.

He is described in some sites as a scholar, soldier, poet and polyglot who scored important victories against British rulers but whose treatment of captured non-Muslim subjects and British prisoners of war was controversial.

As Tipu Sultan continued to trend on Monday, one tweet observed that "People are debating Tipu sultan & his legacy like he lives in race course road in Bangalore today and drives a Bentley."

In the cacophony of fiery tweets, Sameera Gawandi posted, "Let history b history #Tipu sultan y the fight now?"

i know im commenting this after a long time gap, but still i too want to comment on the controversy. tippu was a great ruler and the only one who posed a threat to the British.tippu wouldn't have asked the shah of afghan or french to help if the marathas and the nizam of Hyderabad had helped him. the marathas were selfish of tippu so they helped the british against him how patriotic is that not helping ur own countrys king, so what if he is a muslim. the kingdom of mysore was 95% hindus many of the solders ie 85% were hindus his minister and commander was a hindu.if the temples were destroyed, then it was sad, but then it was war.tippu used many cannons and rocket bombs to fight during that time so that coud have destroyed some temples that doesn't mean he targeted only hindu temples.even they say many malyalies were converted by tippu, how can a person who spent his entire life fighting against the British not convert a Single kannadiga in his own kingdom and have the time to convert malyalis who were not in his own kingdom. these wre all false news spread by the british twho used the policy of divide and rule. so my point here is karnataka govt did the right thing of showing tippusultan tabloid.

Tippu wanted was to become an emperor of south India and his biggest adversaries were the British so he formed alliances with 1. The French 2. King Durrani of Afghanistan 3. The Persians and 4. The Turkish Mongol’s. If his was a freedom movement alliances would have formed with Indian Kings and rulers, but either they remained neutral or he fought against them. Why would an Indian fight another if their goals were the same?

He was ruthless to the Christians in South Canara because he claimed treason. It is possible that some Christians may have supported the British but you can’t punish the whole community Men, Woman and Children for the faults of a few. He was merciless to the Nair’s of Malabar and massacred them, but he was good to the Hindus of Mysore & Cochin, because their Raja’s stayed neutral. However, he slaughtered the Corgi's, and attacked the Hindu Kings of Maharashtra.

In his quest to become Emperor, he consulted Brahmin astrologers in Sree Ranganatha Swami Temple and they suggested remedial rituals which were performed in the Sree Ranaganatha Swami Temple. He then gave them costly presents and spared their temples which is being widely interpreted as love and respect for Hindu religion and traditions!

The reputed historian, Lewis Rice, who wrote the History of Mysore after going through various official records, stated "In the vast empire of Tipu Sultan on the eve of his death, there were only two Hindu temples having daily pujas within the Sreerangapatanam fortress. It is only for the satisfaction of the Brahmin astrologers who used to study his horoscope and suggest remedies so he spared those two temples. The entire wealth of every Hindu temple was confiscated before 1790 itself mainly to make up for the revenue loss due to total prohibition in the country."

All the facts taken from noted historian have made him highly controversial.

History of India written by the British . They used history of India as a tool for demoralizing their enemies .Tipu became infuriated with the some Christians of Canara because they acted as spies and guided the British . Historian Praxy Fernandes points out that the Christians helped Colonel Campbell in the Mangalore fort and adjoining towns by providing them with rice, vegetables, meat, men, and money. After receiving highly exaggerated reports about the role of the some Christians and their help to the British during the Second Anglo-Mysore War,Tipu decided to minimise the threat to his kingdom from the British and banish their supporter of Canara.

As written in the History, role of then Christians helping Colonel Campbell can not be denied.
But the help could be held as conspiracy to fight against Tippu.
King Hyder Ali too had similar concerns, but he was compassionate.
Who will plot against a compassionate King?
If common religion was the basis for doubts, how did Tippu allied with French?
Tippu was controversial, he harshly persecuted not only Christians, but Hindus as well. History cannot be changed.

The Ganesha temple is about a 100 yards from his palace. Another large Ranganathaswamy temple about 200 hundred yards away. He probably woke up every morning to the singing hymns.

Both Tipu Sultana and his father made several endowments to the temple, a large chariot with a depiction of Hindu gods stands in front of the temple to this day. His prime minister was Poorniah a devout Hindu.

When Marathas who were hindus destroyed the Sringeri Mutt, a place of Hindu religious authority, Tipu Sultan wrote to the Sringeri seer

“People who sin against such a holy place will at no distant date suffer the consequences of their misdeeds. Treachery to the Gurus will lead to all round ruin of the family.” He aided in the restoration of the temple and the re-consecration of the image of Sri Sharada. Verify facts at Sringeri mutts website

When you visit Srirangapatna, you can see the place where the palace stood and temples are still there with the chariot.

You can also see the French church that was built during his reign stands there to this day.

Please, let's respect the man who alongside the hindus fought for freedom and one of the few statesmen in the world who died defending the country.

Once again incomplete knowledge..@ Prasheesh Kumar. S. , Mumbai…. Sultan was called the ruller of Mysore.. But tell me one thing where is his palace located?? In Mysore or in Srirangapatna? If che had stolen or taken over the Mysore Palace then why dint he stay in that amazing palace? That’s cos he and his Father were just a care taker of the palace, though Hyder Ali was been asked to take over the palace by the people after the death of the Wodayar.. Instead, he appointed a near relative of the Wodayar as the king. But since he was still a minor, the powers still remained with Hayder Ali and then to Tipu Sultan…

    The Thief resists that Decoit.
Should we call the resistance of thief against decoit as Freedom Struggle ?.
Same story applies to Tippu who stole the Kingdom from Wodeyars. Then he tried to save that stolen kingdom from Decoits like the British. But Thief Tippu took the help of another decoite called French to save his stolen valuables from Decoit British.

For all those who think Tipu fought with the British for his own survival and not for the country.. Please use your brains.. If he just wanted to survive, then he could have easily joined hands with British just like what the Nizam and the Peshwa did.. Those who say he was responsible for the massacre of thousands of Hindus.. he only only punished those who betrayed their motherland and joined hands with British irrespective of their caste and religion which includes Hindus and Muslims as well . Those who say he destroyed temples... m sorry to say it’s just a rumor.. and before u say this again, please try to know what are the connection of Tipu with Sringeri temple, temple at Melkote (It still has gold and silver vessels with inscriptions indicating that they were presented by the Sultan), Temple at Kalale, Ranganatha temple at Srirangapatna. In the courtyard Tipu sultan's Bangalore fort is the Ganesha Temple that is popularly thought to represent Tipu Sultan's religious tolerance. Tipu is known for what he has done to the society and not for which religion he belonged to. If its the religion, then why dont anyone talk about the nizam? Even he is a Muslim!!!

Actually, I have no objection for having Tippu's Tableau. I agree fully that he fought against British for his own survival. Someone questioned why he colluded with French. These things are like strategies for survival and may be that time he thought this would be the best strategy to fight against the British. May be who knows if he had succeeded, he would have later, even fought against french also! As far as his tolerance is concerned, I have read Ghazni, Ghori etc destroying and looting temples, but never read anywhere Tippu doing that. In fact, proof of Ghazni & Ghori's misadventures are still there but not Tippu's. Had he been intolerance how come Srirangapatna temple which is intact in all respects is still there? We know no one is perfect. There could be some kind of atrocities done by him also. After all, he was a King not a democratic ruler. Now it is all a past. Why we should fight over that? Let his tableau be there.
However, the tableau would have been more meaningful if along with Tippu, it had contained other historical persons' models also from Karnataka. (Probably one of the recently departed Wodeyar in his memory, Abbakka, Kempe Gowda etc). Thank you.

A young sultan and warrior of a small state of great India surrounded by powerful, hostile and treacherous neighbors like nizam and Maratha who knew nothing except lust of power and money. And A global smuggler company, armed with elephant teeth and snake skin (east India company) which is supported by great Britain empire. Still he never surrendered since he was not fighting for victory but he was fighting to leave a message for the indo- Pak people.
If Nizam of Hydrabad or Peshwa of Maharashtra supported to Tippu , the history of today`s India would some thing different. If the Tipp sultan succeeded in his attempt without betrayed, today now he would have improved our country no 1 in the whole world in all aspects.
Some historians judge him wrongly Bcos those upper-class enjoyments of booze and girls were punished by tippu. and taught to respect girls. And if he was against non-Muslim it wasn't a big deal for him to demolish the temple in his door steps in mysore which still there. Tippu’s letters to shringeri mutt to bring out important facets of Tippu’s character, and condemning the Maratha raid on the Mutt and his help in the reinstallation of temple.
We must respect him as a man who fought for freedom . and who introduced new techniques and the ruler who respected all religion. and who was not behind luxury life like moghuls but his interest in libraries and science.
Tippu trained Dheeran Chinnamalai who even after Tipu's death fought British, killing one of their commanders. British had to pay Chinnamalai's cook to get information and killed him.
If we love our mother land we must accept & appreciate the history in an unbiased way.
    Jai hind.

And replace the word "Christians" & place "Muslims" in Gujarat

Agree with you. The history written by the British and copied later by Indian authors is twisted to make Tippu look like a villain so that people would not revolt against them and to create a wedge between Hindus and other minorities.

Tipu Sultan, also known as the Tiger of Mysore was a ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore and a scholar, soldier and poet. Tipu was fluent in Kannada, Hindustani, Persian, Arabic, English and French. His treatment of his conquered non-Muslim subjects and British prisoners of war is controversial. Thus he remained an implacable enemy of the British East India Company.
But Tipu was never a fanatic, neither a temple Demolisher nor a bloody dictator rather he was a large-hearted ruler who practiced religious tolerance, respected all religions and their institutions alike and also gave grants for building their places of worship.
Hence we should respect those great qualities of him and during such occasions we should recognize him.

We are better than Tippu because we did not kill five lakh unarmed, helpless Indians, including women and children in the name of Religion. Is this proof sufficient Mr. Acchu Mangalore?

Tippu can be another name for valor. The hatred he had against certain people is because of their affection with British and betrayal towards statehood . Son of soil laid his life for the country , truly honored in the republic day parade.

Persecuted will not get relief if tortured by his own men!
During grave crisis, no one will see from where the relief comes from, be it from his own or from a foreigner!
Valor or heroic character will benefit his own, not to the persecuted.

If I have to suggest to the state, I would suggest it should provide a visual screen presentation of bridges, tunnels, power plants, roads, industry, social reforms and agriculture that is completed in the past year. That will help to benchmark the progress any state made in the past year.

Personally, I to felt it was inappropriate for Karnataka State to have a tableau for the Republic Day , on a very controversial person. Tippu may have been a Hero to some for braving the Brits (so have scores of Indians who have laid down their lives of our Independence). Tipu has killed many innocents based on his biased thinking, he is instrumental in a way, for the present distrust among communities in South Kanara that lead to communal / religious flare ups for silly reasons. This apart, the Tippu statue on the float had no resemblance to the person himself, besides the crude construction, and I was sure that this year the record of Karnataka winning the prize will be broken. Bottom line, depends which side you are on to say if Tippu is a Hero or a Zero. It is not for nothing that there is tremendous opposition to the proposed Tippu University, congressmen have a knack of wooing voters - the rest is left to the imagination of our learned readers.

People from south canara, especially Christians can never forgive nor forget the attrocities of Tipu Sultan. After the 'Treaty of Mangalore', Tipu led over 40000 hindus and christians on a "death march" from Mangalore to Srirangapatna, almost 20000 perished during the journey, and the rest were killed by Tipu's men later . People in Vellore/Tanjaur still talk about the genocide of their people by the hands of Tipu.

Btw, who remembers Sanjay Khan's 'The sword of Tipu Sultan' where he made the Wodeyars of Mysore look like deboucherous, womanizing rulers who had no interest in ruling Mysore ? Shocking that DD and Govt of India let such a rewriting of history. More shocking that such unfair portrayal of Wodeyars did not evoke a single response from the people of Karnataka.

Agree Mathew, can you find any college, universities, water canal bridges by the name of Tipu, Mughals etc,...All these Kings spent peoples' money only on minars,Tajmahal,Qilas,Gardens etc,..where as Vodeyars,Travancore kings,Punjab kings built water dams, medical colleges, universities, hospitals which still running & serving citizens..Vodeyars tableau might have served the purpose since its last scion recently left us..

Ramesh, it is the collective brainwashing by NCERT textbooks, and our general lack of interest in history which is to blame. We are perhaps the only country where cities are still named after some of the most brutal invaders known to mankind.

Tippu Sultan was an Indian, not some Afghan invader. His legacy is complex because he persecuted Hindus in Kerala and elsewhere. But we should admire the fact that he fought tooth and nail, his valor was even praised by the British and he was the first in the world to use rockets in warfare which was then replicated in the American Civil War.

Aggrieved person cannot console himself for being persecuted by his own countrymen!

What consolation persecuted can derive if persecuted, is strong and fights his enemies with valor and invents further more Armour?

Is it benefiting humanity? Surely not, at-least to the persecuted!

Killing enemies is alright. But killing his own subjects based on the Religion, do you call it as valor or patriotism? French were also foreigners. Then why Tippu took their help to Kill 70,000 native Coorgis who were Indians?
