Bangalore, May 20: Students are said to protest plans to make boys and girls sit separately in classrooms at Bangalore University to prevent sexual misbehaviour.

There are also plans to prescribe a dress code and the moves are aimed at protecting female students.

"An opinion came in the last Syndicate that boys and girls should be seated separately, and about the dress code as well," said BG Sudha, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University.

However, Sudha said the authorities will discuss the issue with parents, educationists and counselors before making any decision.

Divided opinion

Many students have said the authorities should pay more attention to issues like infrastructure and academic advancement instead of clothes and seating arrangements.

"I don't think they should discriminate between boys and girls. This is a ridiculous move, they should not police us like this," a student said.

However, others have welcomed the move.

"It's not a bad idea. This way the students will not be distracted from their studies," a student said.

"In any case, girls and boys freely roam around together outside the class these days," he added.

The opinion is clearly divided on the matter, and it now remains to be seen what decision the Syndicate will take after consulting the parents and other parties.
