Mangalore, Feb 1: A huge fire erupted at a piece of land opposite St Lawrence Church at Bondel here on Saturday February 1.

The cause of the fire is not yet ascertained, but as land was full of dry grass and shrubs, the fire spread quickly throughout the land.

Passersby who noticed the fire informed the fire brigade.

As the fire engine could not reach over to the entire area, the personnel brought water in buckets and tumblers from a nearby house to extinguish the fire. The neighbours also helped.

After much effort, the fire personnel were able to douse the raging flames.

The land belongs to Cardinal Energy company based in Mumbai, sources said.

The fire spread across 15 acres of the 40 acres of the land owned by the company, it is said.

City Corporation should insist owners of the empty land in the city corporation area to keep clean their premises by cutting grass and shrubs at lease once in every year or should clean their premises by MCC imposing penalty. Then we can prevent this type of incidents in the city area.

I think in future we all must be ready to face such fire eruption often due to earth warming, dry land hot sun, less rain, and also cutting off forest.and our fire Brigade will arrive when everything is lost.May be it is better in future dry land grass to minimize so that no Chance fire to spread. In Australia and America also they are facing fire due to dryness(not due to Beedi )and extreme heat.we all know learned in School how a fire can start.

49 acres unused land??? 15 acres is good enough land for a proper cricket ground with 75 meter boundary of world standards from the wicket!! Hope Bava will look into a possibility! It is city and unfit for the energy industry!!!

In Australia,USA the forest fire is more dangerous than Bondel, because Their forest having organic gas created by falling dry leaves and nobody is collecting them for many years and stores like layers of huge quantity. Due to rain and these leaves and dry woods become wet and will create natural gas, which will quickly catch fire and very difficult to put off the fire.

May be somebody threw beedi/cigarete in the dry grass. So big land but no security guy? It is very difficult to bring the fire under control when it spreads. The fire brigade & others got a good exercise. Anyhow, no houses nearby and no loss of property.
