Mangalore: Cop accused of misusing passport applicant's documents to obtain SIM card

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Feb 2: In a shocking revelation, a policeman of Uppinangady allegedly misused a man's documents submitted for passport verification to obtain a SIM card from a mobile phone shop for personal use.

The incident came to light after Uppinangady resident Shabeer filed a complaint with the IGP (western range) on Saturday February 1, alleging that the documents  he had submitted at Uppinangady police station for passport verfication were misused by a policeman on duty there.

Shabeer, a resident near Uppinangady Math, had submitted his application at the passport office in Mangalore. His documents were forwarded to Uppinangady police station for verification. The police asked him to submit three mugshot photographs and a copy of his ration card. Two witnesses signed the documents.

"I then came to know that my photograph and a copy of my ration card were submitted at a mobile phone shop to obtain a SIM card," said Shabeer in his complaint.

Shabeer said that on further investigating the matter, it came to light that a policeman by name Laxmeesha of Uppinangady station, who had an Airtel SIM card, had allegedly used Shabeer's photographs and ration card copy to obtain Idea SIM card from Balaji mobile shop.

"A thorough and unbiased investigation must be initiated against the policeman and the owner of the mobile shop," Shabeer urged the IGP.

Following the incident, the locals in Uppinangady expressed fears that their documents too might be misused by police and government bodies. They met the IGP and demanded a high-level probe into the matter, and warned of a protest if no action is taken.

It is also alleged that higher police officials in Uppinangady refused to file a complaint against the policeman, after which the locals and Shabeer approached the IGP. The IGP accepted their complaint and assured them of initiating a probe.

When Govt.employees misact like here ,then it is certainly a cause to discharge from duty and Action to be taken. But when his Boss refuses to do so,we have to think he too is involved in or another case like here and fears that truth Comes out.yellaru kallare!instead of improving ,our Country is going back to Stone Age.Here in Germany any Govt.officers are not supposed to do any misuse or indulge in scandal.when it happens they loose their Job,fine, and Pension .I think a Exchange of Police of both countries could do some betterment.

How did the mobile shop owner issue a SIM card? Does the policeman look like the person in the passport or ration card? If I take someone's documents, will any mobile shop owner issue a SIM to me? Seems like the mobile shop owner just wants a set of documents to issue a SIM. He is not bothered if the buyer is genuine. Both the policeman and the mobile shop owner are partners in crime and strong action should be taken against them.

This issue should be investigated by either NIA or CBI...There could be some deliberations in this regard and police personnel should be immediately put in to suspend until case disposed..Anyhow,this could be either eye opener for investigating agency or SHORTCUT(4 police)

Yes, brother Inyatah, there is no other reason other than to trap brother shabeer with some terror case or make some hoax call through that number. Police personnel should be suspended and stringent action should be taken under forgery case.

It is indeed very surprising that a policeman felt the need to impersonate to get a SIM card in an unknown individual's name!! This is a serious issue and needs to be investigated thoroughly to find out the main reason for his doing this!!

I think this police man might have involved in similar crimes earlier. He might be part of any terror outfit. He might had some criminal intentions looking at the upcoming election. A thorough investigation must be carried out to the privacy and confidential data of people who already trusted these cops for years! Kab sudrega India!

Of course, there is some ulterior motive behind this. He is being from so called minority, may be wanted to involve his name in some illegal activity by this Policeman.
Actually policemen are said to be involved in many illegal activities instead of upholding law. This is one of the many instances that has come to light.
Over and above that, the victim's complaint was not accepted by the police and he had to go with many people to the IGP's office for registering a complaint. Is there anybody to question this police station for their lapse and reason for not accepting the complaint?
People should not forget this incident and make the IGP keep his promise to look into the matter in a serious manner and punish the policeman\shop keeper for their involvement in this "fishy" matter.

May be so many minority guys are framed like this earlier too.

I don't see any reason other than to misuse the sim card and file a terror case against Shabeer. This is how minorities are targeted.
