Mangalore: Students urge U T Khadar to reintroduce fee concession for minorities

Mangalore, Feb 8: Students, mostly belonging to School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya on Saturday February 8 asked U T Khadar, minister for health and family welfare to reintroduce fee concession scheme for minority students which has been dropped starting this academic year.

Irshad Goonadka, a student of social work said, "After separation of the department of minorities and the department of other backward classes (OBC), which were earlier functioning as one, the scheme on fee concession has been dropped for the students belonging to minorities and only the students from OBCs enjoy the facility."
 
As a result, nearly 40,000 students of undergraduate and postgraduate courses belonging to the minority community cannot apply for fee concession, he further said, requesting the minister to take action on the matter.
 
The students told U T Khadar that none of their requests or memorandums has evoked any response from any of the ministers. "We have previously approached Udupi district incharge minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and Dakshina Kannada district incharge B Ramanath Rai who promised to take action but nothing has been done," they said.
 
Another student Preetham D’Souza said, "According to the circular, the last date to apply for fee concession is February 15. However, the circular clearly states that the scheme is applicable only for students belonging to OBC."

In response, Khadar called up the principal secretary of the state government on the spot and requested that the fee concession for minority students be continued this year as per the students' demand. The principal secretary promised to discuss the matter with higher authorities.

    Mr. Khader is showing his colours after becoming a Minister of Karnataka State. This is a classic case of "Preacher becoming Traitor". He should not forget that he is being elected as a people's representative and not a representative of the minority (Muslim) community. There are number of economically downtrodden in our midst and being a Minister, he should help people to become educated. Singling out one community for the concession is not at all commendable. Hope that he will rework his strategy to appease the minority community.

    Mr.Khader rwhat you have done is totally wrong. Be a model politician to this country. you have been elected with a wide, thumping majority not from only muslim votes. their where lot poor, down ridden mangaloreans had voted for you looking ahead their developments from you. help the poor, needy Mr.Khader. Religion is just a belief, faith and practice. we afe indians first. didnt expected such kind of spot decision from you. you have let us down.Wipe out this religion based development scheme. shame on these politicians.

    Merit is long dead. Quotas in schools, then colleges, then post-graduate and then jobs. Where does it end ? If something has not worked for 66 years, why will it work now ? Our government offices and hospitals do not have a single person with triple digit IQ thanks to the stupid vote bank policies.

    Why fee concession only for Minority? It should be applicable to who are poor irrespective of religion. Our country will never develop if we always divide among ourselves based on religion, caste. All these schemes which a particular party brings to minority or majority are fooling us. They want to create vote bank by doing that.

    Minorities do not require fee concession because they have the backing of their respective RELIGION.
    Kindly abolish SC/ST/OBC and have only 2 categories General and Economically BACKWARD...

    India want to move ahead but do not want to end cast based concession.
    If they really want then it should end, only SC/ST should be eligible for it. no other community.
    Yes under poverty line may be included.

    Concession should be based on family income and not on religion or caste. Also priority should be given for merit students who cannot afford to pursue higher studies. Religion and caste should not be a criteria for concessions.

    Dear Khader bhai, do something good for the students who are economically backward or poor. Fee concession to be made irrespective of caste, religion, color or creed. Minority or whoever but first preference to be given for poor children.

    Mr. Khader being a very responsiible, forward thinking person, should have replied to students that it is time for evryone not to seek any benifits based on caste. If a student from one caste is excempted from paying fees, every other student has equal right to have the same benifits. We have crossed 66 years after independence and if it is not now, then never to eradicate this caste based reservations.
    Forget Sonia, Mr. Khader should have upheld what is right.

    Due to the religion and caste based benefits, economically sound people are enjoying the concessions.

    Reservations and concessions could be given only to economically poor families.
