Fog disrupts air traffic at Mangalore airport

Mangalore, Feb 9: Thick fog around the coastal region of the twin districts, especially around the Mangalore International Airport area forced delay in landing and take-off of several domestic and international flights on Saturday February 8.

Dubai-Mangalore Jet Airways flight scheduled to land at Mangalore was delayed by at least four hours. According to the airport sources, the flight landed at around 9.50 am on Saturday.

Domestic Jet Airways flight from Mumbai landed after an hour's delay in the noon. Another Jet flight from Bangalore which was scheduled to land at 8.15 am was delayed, and later cancelled.

Thick fog also affected road traffic, with several vehicles lined up in a gridlock, moving at a snail's pace with headlights on even at around 9 in the morning.

The foggy weather starts at around 4 am, and continued till 9 am. Talapady, Kotekar, Ullal, Bajpe, Kinnigoli, Mulky, Padubidri and surrounding regions were the most affected by the fog.

Some of the senior citizens expressed surprise at the thick fog, which has not been seen for long at this time of the year.

    I am not against development. Development is required but not at the cost of nature.

    Dubai has not lost its natural beauty instead it increased its beauty in the recent years. In the past Dubai was only a desert and Dubai Govt has invested a huge amount to increase its greenery. So it is better not to compare Dubai with Mangalore.

    We all need development, but at the same time we have a responsibility to preserve our nature as well.

    This happens mostly in monsoon and winter season when the visibility is poor and the pilots have to take extra precaution when landing. Many times the flights are diverted to other airports. I also had the same experience as the pilot had to take many rounds till it was cleared by ATC for landing. Passengers get frustrated due to the delayed landing but pilots want to have a safe landing for the safety of everyone on the flight. Even in New York and other cities in US during the last couple of weeks 1000's of flights were cancelled or diverted due to snow storms and windy conditions. Even my flight was cancelled due to bad weather. There were many passengers who were struck at airports and hotels due to the bad weather.

    Last june when I travel from dubai to Mangalore filght reached Mangalore at 3.40 pm and it is taken to land 2 hrs because of this foggi . i observed clearly it is the very dark smoke from some factories nearby. pilot tried to land the flight 4 -5 times, but he could not because of this smoke. evry one is afraid in the flight and finally pilot landed the flight at 5.40pm it was really a very hard experience. Airport authorities must take actions against this smoke yielding factories.

    We the people of Mangalore destroyed the natural beauty of Mangalore in the name of development and replaced all the green agricultural land with concrete buildings and factories and destroyed the nature with pollution. This is the reason we are seeing dramatic changes in the weather conditions of our areas in and around Mangalore. Even this thick fog may be a result of our development.

    The entire coastal area is filled with all types of Industries, which replaced the greenery and polluted the surroundings. Now the temperature is extremely increased in Mangalore and on top of this our Politicians are working hard implement Niddodi Thermal Power Plant project, Turning of Netravati river with Ettina Hole project etc....

    At least this is time for us Mangaloreans to stang united to save our nature.

    It is a known fact that human beings cannot change the natural settings of this earth.!

    Very funny.You are sitting in Dubai and commenting about concrete buildings in Mangalore. Fog will be there if there is moisture & humidity. Its not smoke fog.

    Dubai too lost its natural beauty in the last few decades. That doesn't mean that there was no fog before the construction boom in the Emirates. The fog is just a natural phenomenon. Moreover, there is no fog every day. Just google it.
