  • Avina Miyar Crowned Poet of the Month

Karkala, May 23: A day-long Konkani literature seminar jointly organized by Daaiz and Mitr weekly at Christ the King Church premises was successful in its mission.  The seminar was inaugurated by parish priest Fr Lawrence Gomes.


Noted Konkani writers Dolphy Cascia, Gerry D’Mello, Bendore, Gladys Rego and Vally Quadros presented their views on Konkani in the session held in the morning, which was followed by Edwin J F D’Souza and Kevin D’Mello’s talk on short stories. The participants came up with their views on literature and other activities in Konkani.  A very informative and interesting Konkani quiz programme was later conducted by Vitori Karkala and Arun Ajekar.

The stage programme was held later which was presided over by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Eric Ozario.  At first Melwyn Pernal presented a brief report about the activities of Daaiz in the last 2 years. The occasion was also made memorable as 5 new books of Ashavadi publication were released.  “Pattim Gavank” (novel by Vally Quadros, Ajekar), “Bamunnachem Chedum” (Collection of Poems by Echchem Pernal), “Darbarantli Pirgonn (Collection of Poems by Vally Quadros), “Doryak Udak (Write-ups by Kavita Adhyayan and “Sagorachea Vatecheo Zori (Poems by 100 poets), the first Konkani e-book were released by Dolphy Cascia, Eric Ozario, Edwin J F D’Souza, Gladys Rego and Fr Vally Fernandes respectively.

Gerry D’Mello inaugurated the web copy of Sagorachea Vatecheo Zori (This book is available on web).  Gerry D’Mello who will be leaving to Canada was felicitated on the occasion by Eric Ozario.  Fr Richard Rego, head of Mass Communication and Journalism department at St Aloysius College, Mangalore honoured Konkani writers hailing from Karkala region.  Accordingly Kevin D’Mello, George Castelino, Fr Ronald D’Souza, Stephen Pinto, Vitori Karkala, Melka Miyar, Avina Miyar and Stan Ro Ajekar were felicitated.

Vally Quadros announced the results of Daaiz Literary Competition – 2005 on the occasion.

Konkani Essay:
First – Cancelled
Second: Dr Edward Nazareth
Third: Stephen Quadros Permude

Konkani Poetry:
First: Echchem Pernal
Second: Melwyn Pinto, Neerude
Third: Wilson Kateel

Fr Ronald D’Souza presented the awards to the winners. Geo Agrar compered the stage programme and Vitori Karkala proposed the vote of thanks.

Vally Quadros presided over the 10th edition of Kavita Sobhann.  Noted Konkani poet Rony Crasta, Wilson Kateel, Geo Agrar, Gladys Rego, Richie Pereira, Gerry D’Mello, Bendore, Elyer Taccode, Naveen Pereira, Victor Lobo, Bajal, Yashwant D S, Melwyn Pernal, Pius James, Sunil Kota, Clement Taccode, Avina Miyar, Stephen Pinto and Vitori Karkala read their poems on the occasion.

Avina Miyar was crowned the poet of the month and was awarded with Rs 500.
