Dubai-bound passenger caught with 55,000 US dollars at Mangalore airport

Mangalore, Feb 10: In a major haul, the officers of directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) on Monday February 10 seized 55,000 US dollars from a passenger about to board a flight to Dubai at Mangalore International Airport.


The foreign currency was seized from Abdul Basheer Kadappuram Mohammed, a resident of Kudlu in Kasargod.

The officers found 55,000 US dollars, worth over Rs 34 lac in Indian currency in his trolley luggage.

Basheer was scheduled to board the 8.55 am Air India Express flight to Dubai. He was caught by the customs officers at around 7.30 am.

It is suspected to be case of foreign currency smuggling, as Basheer had no valid documentation for the currency notes.

Further investigation is on.

    Well, what u said is correct. There is limitation on amount of money. But most paining part is that all rules, regulations are for the common man only. The officer who was interested in the origin of the currency as you claim, if you check his income, It will me out of proportion. Had he involved the same officer in this act it was a gone case.

    What r u saying? Whom are you comparing it to? Being in Dubai do u earn 34 lacks per year? Don't you find many, many Indians Earning more than that by working in India?

    A labour here earns 800 per month while carpenter or Mason in Mangalore is earning almost 400 per day, plus all the freedom.

    Such a large sum being smuggled out (1) Could be fake Dollars (2) If genuine Possibility of a Hawala transaction (3) or payment to be made for the purchase of real estate in Dubai - as there is no mandatory law that requires cheque payments - present real estate boom in Dubai is simply because of the policy "No questions asked as to the source of funds"

    He is a busy businessman. All carry money from Dubai to India, but this guy wants to do business in Dubai. I do not understand his logic. Poor fellow. May be dollar rate was so cheap, he purchased all dollars. Else may be printing dollars to circulate in Dubai. Dear friend, never go to Saudi with these dollars. Unbelievably, he is carrying so much dollars without any fear. I want to join his team.

    Most of the people are happy because when they read the headlines they thought that this guy is from Kasaragod !! What is wrong in carrying US$50000 out of the country? The dollar bills were printed in US which is not having any gold standard.(there is no gold in fort knox- United States Bullion Depository) This guy is merely doing a favour while carrying these shit of papers outside the country. Forget what FEMA or FERA or any other Foreign exchange law states..as long as the currency bills are hard earned money, and they are not fake, whats wrong in it? just because he is not carrying a supporting document( a piece of paper) he is a criminal?

    @Prakash Dubai,you can carry Money out of your Country any amount only after it before the customs above a certain amount.and with documents how it existed.otherwise you are charged with black Money Business.and have to pay Taxes.since he had no documents and was trying to go without and it is foreign currency ,how he got so much Money sure officers are also interested.

    Any illegal act should be punished.

    Actually, these things shouldn't be news, because those businesses are opening flourishing in Kasaragod,there are hundreds of illegal money exchanges, drugs and gold smugglers and hawala traders in Kasargod operating in disguise of Travel Agency,they are also into converting politicians and businessmen's black money into legal by remitting the money from gulf, after working 4 years in Saudi I came back to Kasaragod to open a travel agency and settle in my hometown , within a year i realized that either i should return back to Saudi or be the part of this illegal business in order to survive in the travel business , I choose the former.

    this happens on daily basis, 70% of the gulf bound passengers from kasargod carry foreign currencies, they are just the carriers, its big mafia having top politicians as stakeholders , if you want to exchange foreign currency come to kasaragod you will get upto 5% more than the official exchange rate and without any service tax deductions .

    I would recommend a separate check in counters, customs and security for Kasargod & Bhatkal based passengers (as per their PP) in the airport for both arrivals and departures.
