Mangalore, Feb 12: Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, who also happens to be the district election officer, has instructed the government officials of the district to be in readiness to ensure that the ensuing Lok Sabha (LS) election is held smoothly without any hiccups.

He was addressing the participants of a meeting convened at the auditorium of his office on Tuesday February 11 evening.

“Particular care has to be taken to see that there are no deficiencies in the list of voters. The officials should give priority to applications received for addition of names in the voters list and also objections if any, and take action after scrutinizing them. The officials functioning within legislative assembly constituencies should keep touch with one another towards completing all the preparations systematically,” he said.

He advised the police department and officials connected with election work to coordinate their functioning mutually, and to complete appointment of sector officers, disciplinary officers, inspection squads, vigilance teams, vidiography teams etc without any delay.

He stressed on the need to intensify checking at the district and inter-state borders during the time of election, formation of  24-hour control room, and to address complaints received from the general public without delay.
“There is a need to strengthen the accounting team to monitor expenses of candidates. For this purpose, officials from the income tax and banks would be recruited. All the polling booths within Dakshina Kannada LS constituency have already been physically verified and we have confirmed about the availability of basic facilities. In case of dilapidated school buildings housing polling booths, we have shifted the booths to adjoining rooms,” he said.

Additional district deputy commissioner, K Dayanand, provided details of preparations made so far for the election. Mangalore subdivisional officer, Dr Prashant, Puttur subdivisional officer, Krishnamurty, deputy commissioner of police, Jagadish, assistant superintendent of police, Shivakumar, all the tahsildars in the district, and election officers of the assembly constituencies, were present at the meeting.

Mr. Ibrahim take note of your comments (quote)" In case of dilapidated school buildings housing polling booths, we have shifted the booths to adjoining rooms" (unquote). First of all shame on the administration to see dilapidated school building even after 66 years of independence. Second, what measures are taken to maintain these school buildings? Third, are these school buildings are adequately insured? Why don't you introduce insurance for students and teachers and staff working in these risky school buildings? Fourth, what do you mean by adjoining rooms? when the school building itself is dilapidated, how are you taking that risk to shift to adjoining rooms in the same dilapidated school building? Are the polling officers are your personal property?? Even if they are, you should take care of them more than anyone else. Fifth, as you are recruiting the officials from income tax and banks to strengthen the accounting team to monitor expenses of the candidates why don't you recruit people from the public, NGOs for election duty as polling officers instead of teachers. Also, please see that there are facilities for women polling officers like wash rooms, proper accommodation etc where they are posted as polling officers.
