Mangalore: Two more smuggling attempts foiled at airport, gold worth Rs 28 lac seized

Mangalore, Feb 14: In two more fresh cases of attempted smuggling, the officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport seized gold totally weighing 932.500 grams on Friday February 14. In both cases, the gold was in the form of sheets hidden in the base of trolley bags of two passengers who arrived by the same flight from Dubai.

In the first case, the officers seized two gold sheets, totally weighing 466 grams and valued at Rs 14,09,650 concealed in the base of a brown coloured rexine trolley bag belonging to passenger Shereef Abdulkareem, a resident of Thekkil, Kasaragod.

Shereef arrived at Mangalore International Airport on Friday at about 5.30 pm by Air India Express fight IX384 from Dubai.

Similarly, in the second case, the officers seized two gold sheets, totally weighing 466.500 grams and valued at Rs 14,11,162, concealed in the base of a black coloured rexine trolley bag.

The bag was in the possession of passenger Riyas Kuchanath Purayil, a resident of Haripuram, Kasaragod. He too arrived at Mangalore International Airport on Friday at about 5.30 hrs by Air India Express flight IX384 from Dubai.

The total gold seized in both the cases is valued at Rs 28,20,812.

Operations were conducted under the supervision of Pravin Vinod, assistant commissioner of customs, Mangalore International Airport. 

Further investigation is in progress in both the cases, under the guidance of commissioner D Purushotham.

    Last week I had sent 1Tola bar with my friend as I had to gift one to my friend. Here I paid 1791 Q.R and my friend had to pay a duty of 2620. I don't know how this duty is calculated, my friend was not having any other Jewelry or electronic items, I was totally confused about this. One thing is clear, pure Gold is taxable even if it is a single Gram. So beware about this.

    BUT WE HAVE TO APPRECIATE AIRPORT SECURITY FOR SEIZING /CATCHING SMUGLERS . IF THEY WERE NOT HONEST WE CANNOT IMAGINE HOW MUCH GOLD WOULD HAVE COME TO INDIA BY SMUGGLING.
    BUT THE SAME TIME I WONDER WHY THIS MUCH SMUGGLING ATTEMPTS ARE NOT REPORTED IN OTHER INDIA AS MUCH AS MANGALORE.

    It is very necessary to enlighten some of the people on how the X-ray machines at the airport actually work. Everything that passes under the X-ray machine is given a specific colour. This colour is given with respect to the density of a substance. Since gold has a specific density , no matter in what form it is concealed , it will be detected. So if anyone thinks that they are fooling the custom officers, they are wrong since they cant cheat technology.

    For no apparent reason Indian government is imposing 10% customs on gold import (this wasn't the case before Aug-2013). Indian Government is stating Rupee -Dollar value depression is the reason behind the move but it didn't helped at all. The government doesn't understand how exactly the financial market works (neither do I) but they are creating a huge difference in gold value when compared to the international market to the local market and if someone carrying some extra gold without paying tax is illegal. Why we should pay this extra tax to the government just because they made a new rule last year? We are not getting any free gold in the Gulf states, we are buying it at international market rate. and Govt needs commission for that? and if you think you are a law abiding citizen and doing the right things by following the rules then its good for you. You are nothing but just another ignorant individual who is blindly following what your corrupt government is saying.
    Say a flight carries 180 passengers and each passenger is carrying on an average 10 grams of gold as an ornament there is nothing wrong with it. so 1.8 kilograms of gold legally entered into the country without paying any tax. Now say each passenger wishes to increase his share by 10 grams (so total its 20 gram each) its another 1.8 Kg gold entered into the country. Do yo think that the customs officer will stop these 180 passengers to measure their ornament size just because its 10 grams more? No way..they cant do that. But an individual carries 500 gram gold, its smuggling!! If Raj thackeray and his MNS goons are refusing to pay toll, they are doing a social justice and if a guy from Kasargod refuses to pay the tax on the gold he is a smuggler! I don't care how many agree or Disagree I may get but I will be happy if next time someone from the gulf travelling to India is inspired to carry 10 grams of extra gold! F.. the government and what it says. do what you feel right and just.

    Prakash logically you may argue you are right, but you are not..above incidents are pure case of smuggling..you are allowed to bring 2 bottles of liquor from duty free..180 passengers can bring 360 bottles..if a single person brings 360 bottle liquor from the duty free should customs allow him!!..It will be foolishness to think that a person will save his entire earned money & converts into gold and brings INDIA!!..do you think people earn in Gulf so much so that they will bring Gold in Kgs & Quintals..i have worked in Gulf state in a well paid job, but could afford to bring gold in grams only..Customs & police has to check history, motives souce of these people..

    Looking at the value of the gold smuggled in,it is not possible for someone who is doing ordinary jobs in the gulf to earn that much of money in two years to buy gold of that value. I strongly believe these people procure this gold in Dubai by illegal means which is evident from the methods and different shapes they use to conceal this gold.It is high time for the government to find out how these guys procure this gold in Dubai in collaboration with the Dubai government authorities.
