Mangalore, Feb 15: St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Vamanjoor , Mangalore celebrated its 'Foundation Day' on Tuesday February 11 at 5 pm, in the Conference hall of Academic Block III of the College.
Twelve years ago the foundation stone was laid on this day to mark the beginning of this college. In a most befitting manner this event is commemorated annually by holding the 'Foundation day lecture'” by eminent personalities.
This year Dr G R C Reddy, director, National Institute of Technology Goa, was the honourable chief guest of the programme. The solemn ceremony started with prayer song by SJEC choir. Dr Vincent Crasta, HOD Physics- SJEC, welcomed the dignitaries and introduced the chief guest of the function Dr G R C Reddy.
Dr G R C Reddy, addressed on “Challenges and Opportunities in founding a New Institute of National Importance-Possible Input for SJEC”.
Speaking on this occasion, he highlighted that the progress of the country is based on the quality of the technical institutes in terms of Academic Excellence. He commented that these days quality of students ability, the faculty commitment and research activities are not up to the required level. He stressed on developing an institute that caters to the need of local society first.
He suggested that measures should be taken for the collaboration of research activities of an institute with the Industry in order to become a technical institute of excellence. He proposed the actions needed to be taken up to support, sustain and expand the quality of education. He proposed suggestions towards improving the students interest, the spirit of dedication among the faculty and to update the curriculum to kindle the interest of the students towards innovation.
Dr Reddy appreciated SJEC for its excellent infrastructure and its growth as a premier institute of the nation. He specially congratulated the management and staff for having the three departments (E&E, E&C, CSE) of the college accredited by National Board of Accreditation.
After the oration, on behalf of all the Josephites, director Fr Joseph Lobo felicitated the illustrious personality- Dr G R C Reddy.
Fr Rohith D’Costa and Fr Ajith Menezes, asst directors, Fr William Gonsalvis, Fr Joseph Cardoza,Campus Counsellors , Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, principal ,Dr Rio D’Souza,vice principal and Dr Prakash Pinto, moderator of the oration were the other dignitaries present on the occasion.
The heads of the departments, members of Governing Board, Members of Governing Council, Faculty members and Invitees were also present. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Sheryl Grace Colaco, convener of the programme. The programme was concluded by singing the College Anthem. Salma Shabnam compered the function.
