Mangalore, May 25:
The fight for the Karnataka Legislative council went under way with BJP candidates D H Shankaramurthy, minister for Higher Education and Captain Ganesh Karnik and Congress candidates Ramalingappa and M N Mahesh filing their nominations for the Legislative Council elections to be held in June.

While Shankaramurthy will contest for the South West Graduates' Constituency for the fourth consecutive time, Captain Ganesh Karnik will represent South West Teachers' Constituency. Congress candidates K B Ramalingappa and M N Mahesh filed their nominations for the North West Teachers' and Graduates' constituencies respectively.

The elections for the graduates' constituency will be held on June 8 while that for teachers' constituency will be on June 17.

Each candidate filed more than one nomination paper so as to avoid confusion or rejection. BJP candidates filed four nominations whereas Congress candidates filed three nominations, making a total of seven.

The BJP candidates were taken in a procession to the deputy commissioner's office accompanied by supporters. BJP state president D V Sadanand Gowda, vice-president A G Kodgi, district president Pratapsimha Nayak, ministers Nagaraj Shetty and Dr V S Acharya, N Yogish Bhat, Padmanabh Kottari, Shakuntala Shetty, Raghupati Bhat, corporators and BJP office bearers were present.
