Mangalore, Feb 18: Smugglers of gold are getting innovative by the day, but not enough to outsmart the alert customs officers at Mangalore International Airport.

The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport busted yet another modus operandi and detected concealment of gold in the baggages of passengers arriving from Dubai on Tuesday February 18, in two separate cases.

The officers seized gold totally weighing 789.950 grams valued at Rs 24,09,347 in the two cases.

In the first case, the officers seized one gold sheet and one gold rod, totally weighing 351.350 grams and valued at Rs 10,71,617 concealed in a cream wafer tin and a marker pen and further concealed in a carton.

The carton was seized from the possession of a passenger named Jaiyafar Chala Muhammed Kunhi Haji, a resident of Vidyanagar, Kasaragod. He arrived at Mangalore International Airport on February 18 at around 5.30 am by Jet Airways fight 9W531 from Dubai.

In the second case, the officers seized 18 sets of gold hook holders and hook bar holders for trousers, coated with silver colour paint, totally weighing 438.600 grams and valued at Rs 13,37,730.

The gold hooks and bar holders were concealed in the trousers kept in a carton box that was in possession of a passenger named Noushad Mouval, a resident of Thachangad House, Pallikere, Kasaragod. He arrived at Mangalore International Airport on Tuesday at around 7.30 am by Air India Express flight IX814 from Dubai.

In both the cases it is noticed that the smugglers resorted to unique methods of concealing the goods by fabricating/moulding the gold in various shapes and concealing the same in their baggages.

God knows how many gold bars are passed before. Custom officers catch 1 or 2 cases out of 100. Very soon Mangalore & kasargod become a very rich city.

All is Well.As these Customs officials are catching the smuggled Goods.What about Next Step where these smuggled goods goes.Are these Accountable?? Is there any Track record?? If So its A Good Revenue for the Government. Government must spend this revenue for the good cause.And shouldn't be utilized by Corrupt officials. Man-galore Airport Needs Safe Wrapping Counter, which is not available At Present.The counter must be Auctioned for lower bid so that Passengers may Avail better Rates for the Transactions.Now one Normal soda at Mangalore airport is costing Rupees 40.This is because of high bidding to attain the counter.Even passenger can not have a better dine and snack because of high rates.

It looks like these caught smugglers are either small time operators or may be just a tactic to divert attention of customs officers from major consignment slipping away from the same door. It's like "Hati chale gayi aur poonch pakad ke latak na" Margin on gold is so attractive, that big players will not just stay away from their business

Customs department will shortly have a new employee by the name of Mr Chidamabaram, who will be jobless after the upcoming election. It is his Idiocracy, which has led to this mess. Prior to bring these new rules,smuggling of gold had almost disappeared. Even hawala transaction was going for its natural death. By one master stroke the great thinker and Harvard graduate messed out everything.

I think the only thing/way left
now is to clone the carrier's 'organs', drape them in 'gold' and fix it somehow! It will then depend on the 'shyness' of the customs officer,how much he is prone to it and where he will catch and how long he will catch!

Many will disagree with my opinion. However, I am not against any law or for smuggling.
How many tons of gold we can buy from the money looted by "Corruption" in India?
I think smuggled gold are paid. Smuggling gold is to fetch around 10% more profit in India. In general terms, it is a business from petty businessmen right?. If the smugglers are allowed freely to bring gold to India, then the partial demand for gold will meet and the price of gold will come down. The common man will benefit out of it... right?

activities other passengers have to go in hardships @ Mangalore. I was carrying a lED torch in the checked in Baggage & my full bag was marked X on all sides.Baggage was opened and only my clothes were stripped.

Definitely smuggling is against LAW,
but now this is a harvest SUGGY for customs dept.From one passenger they took Rs 2000/- pribe for wearing a TISSOT watch. From one female passenger demanded Rs 55000/- customs duty for wearing gold. Which is wore time of her MANGALORE departure and related OLD invoices she used to carry.While produced customs official not agree and later the duty amount reduced step by step from 55000/- to Rs 10000/- later Rs 5000/- refuse to pay later they shown their real color for begging money. They took Rs 900/- from purse and left Rs 100/- for her auto fare. From one passenger for wearing finger ring,they started begging money. This is the scenario and FACT observed today morning time of DXB/IXE JET AIRWAYS 9W531 flight.

God knows till when these DESHDROHI's will enjoy with this type of misbehavior

Best suggestion I would like to give Mangalore customs people is that, kindly print all these news items appeared on daijiworld, and post near AI EXpress and Jet Airways check in counter. Or a give a copy to all Kasargod passengers (Can be translated to Malayalam too). The reason for every day incident is, these passengers are not aware of any of the recent arrests in mangalore airport. Try this out, surely smuggling cases will come down dratstically. Thank You

If customs can use the seized gold for their expenses then the M'lore customs doesn't need any grant from central govt. They can bear all their staff cost, maintenance cost etc.. out of these gold.
