Mangalore, May 26: Friday, May 26, 2006 will be a red-letter day in the history of Mangalore airport with a chartered international flight landing at 5 pm on the new runway.
During the past week, the news of the postponement of the Air India Express flight, originally scheduled to land on May 21, had thrown cold water on the Mangaloreans' dream of seeing Bajpe airport emerging as a new international flight destination.
Now the landing of the chartered flight from Sharjah on Friday will mark a major breakthrough.
Air India Express has reportedly cited reasons of shortage of staff and adequate aircraft to start the service.
This landing of the chartered flight on Friday will affix an official stamp of recognition on way to Mangalore's being raised to the status of an international airport in due course.
With the tour operators, Alpen Tours and Travels of Bangalore, bringing in 30 passengers from Sharjah, Mangalore is likely to get a big boost as a tourist hotspot.
Airport sources said that the inadequacies of customs and immigration matters have been taken care of. Canara Bank would open a counter for foreign exchange, said the sources.
