Mangalore, May 26: Heavy and steady rains were witnessed in the district on Thursday May 25.  While most of the persons were caught unaware owing to the sudden and continued rain, there was something which was not at all unexpected.  It was the usual power cut.

Electricity failure in the rainy season is a common phenomenon in the district.  However, MESCOM has never been taking this seriously enough which is clearly evident in the way many areas in and around the city were thrown into darkness on Wednesday night and during long hours of Thursday too.

There was electricity failure for long in the Kankanady, Balmatta, Bykampady, Kavoor etc area.  But when contacted MESCOM about the problem, they had a ready answer that it is common in rainy season.

It is always better that MESCOM does some preparations such as changing of old and potentially dangerous live-wires, cutting of branches of trees which are on the verge of falling etc to face the rainy season.  However, this year MESCOM has hardly done anything towards this.

There was electricity failure for long period just at the beginning of the monsoon season.  People are of the opinion that as the days go, monsoon will catch momentum and will steadily increase.  If the situation continues in the same way, it will not be a wonder if the residents of the city will have to spend most of the rainy season in darkness.
