Mangalore, May 27 (Saturday, 3-45 pm): Kottara and Daddalkad areas in the northern end of the city were flooded after the incessant, overnight rains that hit the city.
By 6 am on Saturday, low-lying areas started getting totally inundated. The residents are worried that since the rains were moderate, although
non-stop, the after-effects are already alarming. They wonder what the case would be should the city face torrential rains.
The city appears to be paying heavily for bad planning and haphazard building activity. Fields and ponds are being filled with loose earth and being developed for building activity, leaving no scope for flowing water.
This is certainly a wake-up call. In spite of warning from NGOs and public-spirited citizens, the city administration and town planners do not appear to see beyond their term of office.
Unless a serious thought is given to this matter and a long-term plan is chalked out, it is a clear blueprint for disaster.
