Karkala: Shocking apathy - Electric pole right in the middle of road!

R B Jagadish
Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (SP)

Karkala, Feb 24: Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Ltd (Mescom) has been accused of doing nothing to obviate the danger posed by an electric poll standing at the centre of the connecting road between Kukkundoor Jayantinagar fourth and fifth cross roads. This poll is located in the middle of this newly laid road.

A sum of two lac rupees had been sanctioned from out of the chief minister’s grant for the laying of the said road at the request of Kukkundoor gram panchayat, during the period of chief minister, D V Sadananda Gowda. The road was asphalted two weeks back. The electric poll carrying high tension wires should have been shifted before the road was laid, but Mescom allegedly showed disinterestedness to do so because of the cumbersome procedures and heavy cost involved in shifting the poll. The last gram sabha had also resolved for shifting this pole.

The contractors completed the work of laying the road, as any delay in executing the work would have hampered the work in view of the fact that election is round the corner, and all works will come to a halt once model code of conduct comes into force.

The electric pole in question is located at a road bend. This pole is showing every sign of turning into a nightmare for vehicle drivers, particularly two-wheelers.

Kukkundoor gram panchayat president, Antony D’Souza, when contacted, fumed about the irresponsible response of Mescom officials towards their duty for shifting of this pole. “As soon as the new road project was approved, Mescom was informed about the need to remove this pole. It has ignored our communication, and Mescom will have to own responsibility for the catastrophes if any that might occur because of its failure to do the needful,” he warned.

Shifting the pole is not only expensive, the people in the locality may also have to bear power cut at least for 2 days. Better widen the road on both sides and also fix street lights on both sides. This pole can be a speed breaker for reckless drivers.

    3 Idiots ( 1. Mescom, 2. Panchayat 3. Public)
if the cost of shifting this Pole is high. then the road can be made by avoiding this pole. If you look at the picture , there is sufficient space available to widen the curve near pole towards left side !!!!

Electric pole seems to be older than this Road. So while making this new Road itself, they should have thought of shifting the road little bit on the left side without any additional expense so that the pole comes on the right outer side of the road. By doing so even the Road would have been more straight.
Shifting existing electric Pole with so many wires is not so easy. So, the best solution is as suggested by Ravi Shenava.

There is lots of space on left & the Right side of the Pole.
So acquire some land from left & right side and extend the road on the left & right side and make Electric pole as a Circle as three roads meet here.

What practical solution when Mescom cannot afford 75,000 Rs (Maximum) to shift the light Pole you think they will go into the hassle of paying some lakhs then civil court cases( from the landowner) etc., be practical this is the fight between two authorities and the public has to bear, and as expected Road(PWD) is trying to teach MESCOM a lesson!

See the Photo. There is already Govt land on the left side. So no need of acquiring fresh land. On existing land itself road could have been built on the left side.

It is all bureaucracy of Mescom, Road contractor will not be paid unless he completes his job of Road construction(under PWD), we do not know the contract intricacies as it might be in the Contract that Mescom shall relocate the light pole but Mescom probably again uses the service of a private contractor for this kind of activity and Mescom might have asked the Road Contractor to pay that amount and the Road contractor shall go as per his contract with PWD .....so basically it all boils down to contractual issues between 2 authorities, if we go to check you may see a cupboard full of correspondence on this subject, but the ultimate result is what we get, so whom do we blame?!! it is the court to decide if we go as per legal procedures, amicable settlement Mescom should move their light pole and PWD shall reinstate the road!

Most probably DVS may have started asking the refund of 2 lacs paid from CM fund when he was CM as the work was not done. Just not to lose the 2 lacs, they have hurried with the completion of road work without shifting the E\Pole.
It is easier to widen the road on the one side and if done, it will straighten the road with better visibility of the traffic and a small roundabout can be built around the E\Pole. That will also help traffic if any, from the mud road on the other side.

Is this negligence or " Dont Care " attitude? Now, do we wait for a major disaster to happen to shift this pole to the side, as it happens always..?
