Mangalore, May 28: The monsoons appear to have hit the coastal Karnataka well ahead of the date of forecast, May 30.
Reports of artificial floods have been received from various points of the city. As reported already, Kottara Chowki and the surrounding areas were the worst hit.
Although no damage has been reported, normal life and traffic was affected and all the shops had to down the shutters. Actual damage by drenching will be known when the water level will have subsided and shops will be opened.
Water-logging was reported at Dr B R Ambedkar (Jyoti) circle, A B Shetty circle, Bunder, Badria College and near Infosys at Kottara. Kottara being a arterial junction for the national highway 17, traffic was affected for some time.
Low-lying areas in Kodialbail, Attavar, Jappinamogaru, Bijai and Yemmekere grounds wer also water-logged.
A total rainfall of 112.2 mm has been recorded in Mangalore during 24 hours ending 8 am on Saturday.
Flights affected
Owing to poor visibility, all flights arrived late at Bajpe. The Chennai-Mangalore Kingfisher ATR flight could not land and was diverted to Bangalore. Similarly, the Mumbai-Mangalore flight of Jet Airways was diverted to Bangalore, but later in th evening it landed in Mangalore.
The much-awaited Sharjah-Mangalore chartered flight too did not materialize on Saturday on account of technical reasons.
