Karkala, May 28: In a tragic mishap reported from Nitte near here, three from a group of ten schoolgirls who had gone on a swimming outing drowned in a river at Tirumalabettu in Nitte-Parapady on Saturday morning.

The three girls have been identified  as Nishmita (15), daughter of Chinnappa Salian of Mumbai, Pooja (13), daughter of Aravind Suvarna of Mumbai, and Nitte High School student Ashwita (14), daughter of Nitte panchayat member Bharati Suresh Suvarna.

Nishmita and Pooja are said to have been Mumbai residents and had arrived here on May 24 to attend a wedding. Ahead of a wedding reception on Sunday, about ten girls went on a swimming outing in Shambhavi on Saturday morning. While one of the girls was about to drown, two others went to rescue her, but all the three were dragged by the river currents.

The rest of the girls made a dash home to call elders for help. But then it was too late to save the lives of the three girls.
