Mangalore: American diplomat lays stress on strengthening Indo-US relationship

Mangalore, Feb 28: Monica Sledjeski, political and economic officer at the US Consulate General in Chennai, was in the city on Thursday February 27, accompanied by consul general Jennifer McIntyre.


Sledjeski said that her country had taken several initiatives towards strengthening the bond between India and United States of America, adding that simplification of the procedure for processing of visa applications has been one of them.

She was speaking at a meeting on the issue of opportunity for improving trade and commerce between the two countries and investment opportunities, held at the office of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district deputy commissioner here on Thursday.

“Both the countries have good relationship, and there are ample opportunities for investment,” she noted, duly appreciating the fact that Mangalore has been identified as a centre for educational excellence.

MLA, J R Lobo, explained that the twin-districts of DK and Udupi had given birth to several banks and that banking activities had flourished here. He felt that this area has tremendous potential for investments.

Deputy commissioner, A B Ibrahim, dealt with industrial and commerce scenario of the district in his address. District superintendent of police, Shantanu Sinha, officials from various departments, president and representatives of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and others were present.

    I like to write here an incident, not related to this, just for our readers' information. In the heydays of communism, the erstwhile USSR had planted missiles pointing at USA. USSR ambassador to the USA was called in the Secretary of State office and was asked to answer right away if it is true or not. The Ambassador without any change in expression, said "I am not standing in a court of law to answer you right away. I will enquire with my govt and you will get your answer in due course" and just walked away.
