Mangalore: Passenger caught at airport with foreign currencies worth Rs 13.39 lac

Mangalore, Feb 28: The officials of the city unit of directorate of intelligence (DRI) on Thursday February 27 caught a passenger who was trying to smuggle in UK and Australian currencies worth Rs 13.39 lac.

The passenger was identified as Nizamuddin Abdul Khader, resident of Kalnadu in Palakkad district, Kerala.

The DRI officers found 9,900 UK pounds and 5,800 Australian dollars, altogether worth 13.39 lac in Indian currency, hidden in Nizamuddin's trolley bag.

Nizamuddin arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight IX 813 on Thursday night.

    When india needs foreign currency they look towards kerala and then criticize the same citizens only kerala has roads with a give way sign road marks, stop signs, continuous lines 90 % of indian drivers don't know what it means,kerala is close to international standards.cross the border to mangalore and the road misery begins

    Neither illiteracy nor ignorance of customs rules is the cause in this case! If he is so ignorant he will not buy UK pounds or Aus dollars. From where on earth he can save 13 lac rupees while working as a laborer in Dubai? These people are exploited by some smugglers or travel agents for some little commission for carrying out their job. Actual brains behind these activities go scot-free while these poor carriers gets caught!

    Fully agree with Mr. Shenoy. I don't see why anyone would "smuggle", if they were informed properly in advance about the rights and wrongs in declaring them.

    Most of them are laborers and do not know how to transfer the amount legally through banks. They probably think their hard earned money will be taxed heavily by the government, if they disclose it.

    Some sort of quick education by Indian mission there is needed.

    Mr. John D'Souza,
    Since Keralites are 100% literate, they believe that people of other states are unintelligent, rather fools. If you happen to meet a Keralite, before asking your name, his first question will be "Where are you from?" and laugh sarcastically if your reply is other than Kerala.

    Because 85% of Kerala and 95% of Kasargod people working in the Gulf.

    Only 15% from rest of India.

    Kerala is the highest contributor of foreign currency to Indian economy.
