Amid protests, CM lays foundation for Yettinahole project at Chikkaballapur

Daijiworld Media Network – Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Mar 3: Despite widespread protests, chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday March 3 laid the foundation for the controversial Yettinahole project, which is meant to supply water to water-starved districts of Hassan, Bangalore Rural, and Chikkaballapur by diverting water of Netravati river in Dakshina Kannada.

The foundation stone laying ceremony was held at RMV ground near BGS World School in Chikkaballapur.

Siddaramaiah symbolically laid foundation stone for Yettinahole project in the presence of union ministers, K H Muniyappa, Veerappa Moily, T B Jayachandra, and others. MLA, Sudhakar, delivered the welcome address. Veerappa Moily, who represents Chikkaballapur Lok Sabha constituency, also addressed the gathering.

Addressing the gathering, Siddaramaiah said that the Yettinahole project was highly important, and that the government had conducted a scientific study before approving the project. "There is no water resource near Kolar and Chikkaballapur, hence this project is important. People of this region are being afflicted with diseases due to water contaminated with fluoride and arsenic. The project is expected to bring 400 TMC of water to this region and solve the crisis faced by the people," he said.

"The protest against the project is unnecessary, as it will not affect the people of Dakshina Kannada district. I request the people to call off their protest," he appealed.

"The government is committed to provide clean drinking water to the people of Kolar and Chikkaballapur. We will start this project and complete it too. Some people say this project will not go on, do not listen to them," he urged.

He also appreciated Dr Veerappa Moily for pursuing this project with the government and getting it approved.

Protests

It is said that over 560 government buses were diverted from their routine operations, to bring people from far off villages to the venue of the programme. This caused lot of inconvenience to villagers as availability of buses for travel to other places was scarce.

At the same time, a large number of protestors demonstrated against this project at Chikkaballapur. They wore black badges and took out a procession in the town, apart from raising slogans against the government's decision to go ahead with Yettinahole project. They entered into heated arguments with police.

The protestors were led by former minister, Bache Gowda, former MLAs, Jyothi Reddy, Permanent Irrigation Project Committee president, Anjaneya Reddy, K B Nagaraju etc. Angered by the arrests, some protestors also smashed wind shields of buses. Over 500 protestors including the above leaders were arrested by the police in this connection.

The project will be implemented by the department of water resources, while Karnataka Irrigation Corporation Ltd happens to be the executing agency.

Even as people of Dakshina Kannada district have wholeheartedly supported the district bandh call given by Karavali Jeevanadhi Netravati Rakshana Samiti and other organizations against this project, and despite the fact that several senior Congress leaders are supporting this call, the government is determined to go ahead with the project.

No political gain, says Veerappa Moily

Clarifying his position, union minister, M Veerappa Moily, who represents Chikkaballapur Lok Sabha constituency, said that this project is being implemented to permanently quench the thirst of five districts, and that there is no question of reaping any political benefit out of this move.

Speaking to reporters in the city on Sunday March 3, Moily said that this project is expected to be completed in five years, and that the project plans to utilize a part of over 2,000 tmc water which gets emptied into Arabian Sea through River Netravati and hence becomes unavailable for the use of people, for the benefit of draught-hit districts of the state.

He insisted that this is not Netravati River Diversion Project as being made out, and that some water is just being utilized from out of the subsidiaries of this river. He insisted that water from this project will never be used to fill any dam or tanks, and that it is not meant even for irrigation purpose. He therefore, stoutly held himself against holding of protest against this project by people who he said, seem not to have properly studied it.

The project will cause disaster destroying the western ghats and will decertify a heaven named Mangalore and whole of DK district. Moreover, the water will not reach the intended recipients. All this is being done to eat 12000 Crores. Moily is back stabbing his mother.

    Dear All,

Especially those who oppose the project. Please note that the region under consideration is facing severe problems for water. It is relevant to mention that in this region even after digging 1000fts no certainty of getting water. By luck if water found it will not be fit for drinking. In spite of this providing water, which is a very basic need is essential. It is also very important that as per the scientific analysis made there will be no environmental damage and also the interest of the people of DK will not be prejudiced. Thus the action of the Karnataka Govt. in initiating the project is to be appreciated in the interest of humanity.

The crocodile tears of the elected representatives of DK who oppose the Yattinahole project should not be distributing food to the stranded, but should be in Bangalore voicing their strongest protest against this project even tendering their resignation as the representatives of the people since the people themselves have in a near unanimous number voiced their objections to this diversion of the natural flow of a river.
I would suggest that NONE of those who were there at the foundation stone laying should be allowed to enter the DK area for stabbing us in the back.
By the way, we are so educated and smart- how come till today, nobody has a printed chart of the diversion project Daiji how about one from your side on the net and in your weekly newspaper. It will be an education for people to see for themselves how we are being taken for a royal ride by the crooked politicians.

There are lots of rivers flowing in the direction of these districts to join the sea, why can't they divert those? Because Politicians know that people like you exist only in places like DK so they exploit us.

'No Political Gain but only personal gain'. Now that
K.I. Airport is 35 Kms from Bangalore City the other side of Bangalore is also developing with Housing Layouts and sites in Chikkaballapur , Devanahalli area in addition with Techno Parks and Industries etc. Some people say Ministers have purchased Acres of Land and are making Layouts through Builders and Developers and selling them but Water is not sufficient here and a scarcity . If people have to buy Land and invest, the question of water arises . Now the Developers and Builders along with ministers have an answer as they will say ' Water will be provided in plenty, Yettinahole project is getting ready' .Hence, Moily must be having a political gain and personal gain too .Sadananda Gowda also knew that Congress will come into power as they did so . So if he approved the project , it will be congress that who will take the project forward and in the same time people will revolt against Congress in Mangalore and increase the chances of BJP in the Forth Coming elections .He played his trump card here.

The government still does not have a proper Garbage management facility in place in all major towns and cities of Karnataka ..Where is their concern over Common Man's health.Diseases will prevail if we don't keep our surroundings clean and water bodies clean and now they are diverting rivers to provide clean water .I Only hope they will not divert the planet earth .

Anyways , we should all know what happened in the state of Uttarkand. Humans played with Nature and Humans had to pay a price.

Leave Nature alone is what we should think for the Future generations. Also , Scientist, in India has already warned that India will face a huge water Crisis in years to come if we do control our Population .

The natural resources are meant to be used by humans only. It has to be used by all the living creatures. For the sake of one species(referring to humans here) you just can't play with natural resources and projects like this is harmful for all humans, plants and animals depending on it. We can't ignore other creatures of the planet for our own gain because they are living along with us. A regions problem should be solved locally and too much stress should not put on the region when its resources are getting emptied. If it has a problem, then the excess population should be relocated or alternate sources need to be found. Should not try this harmful projects that ride on nature.

Nature may not react immediately. But will slowly take turns to show its wrath in form of floods, famine, etc. You can remember last year's flood in Uttarakhand, which might have occurred once in a while even if the human influence was not present, but the blame for deaths can be blamed on human activities coz of lots of reckless development around town which had too much pressure. The temple survived because it was situated on high ground and maybe the ancient builders had thought about it and also the tourist population was less. Now these kind of disasters are waiting to happen like a time bomb. Only if the politicians gives a thought and sanctions real research instead of giving bogus statements such as " ... a scientific study before approving the project ..." ,then this project would not be approved.

Mr. Moily you are a selfish politician.

Educate the people how to reserve water by implementing rain harvest, find out how many rivers are dry and why it is dry in Kolar and hasan .

You are destroying the nature and yourself.

It is a matter of great regret that despite opposition and protests from people The Government is going ahead with their plan to divert water from Nathravthi river.

I join several thousands of people with an earnest appeal to the people concerned to review the situation and help the people and do not deprive them of their rights.

Dear Chief Minister, never fool around with the forces of nature. Never know when nature will hit back. Don't do something that the entire people of Mangalore district don't want you to do. Can't you see the whole of Mangalore has come to a standstill today. Can't you see the peoples mandate. Dear Chief Minister, on behalf of all my brothers & sisters from Mangalore, I request you to stop this. I am sure our local MP's & MLA's understand the gravity of this request. Khader, JR Lobo, Moideen Bava, Ramanath Rai, you can stop this. You can convince the Chief Minister. Please do!!

Certainly a black day for the DK district. Since now bars will be open till 1am they need more beer and whiskey so netravati water will certainly help in this regard. Moily and others will pay a heavy price for this.
