Mangalore, Jun 1: Months before the onset of the monsoons the resident of the apartments near the construction site at K S Rao Road had sounded a warning bell on the probable threat to their life and property due to mindless excavation. None seem to have taken note of this. Those who did, only give assurances.
But the rains did play its game. The incessant rains have caved in and now the district administration has ‘seen’ the threat!
Forming the DK District Safety Committee, the Deputy Commissioner H V Parshwanath, on Wednesday, May 31 visited the construction site at K S Rao Road. Instead of initiating immediate safety measures and stern action against the erring architect and the contractors, the committee was found discussing.
Now that the landslide can be visibly seen as a threat, the construction company has been asked to speed up construction work of the retaining wall.
On the other had the Met department has sounded a high alert and things may get worse in the days to come.
Is the district administration waiting for a major landslide and then waking up to a catastrophe?
